What is Madeira wine?

Does anyone know what this is? I have a yummy looking recipe for Spinach/musroom lasagna, but it calls for cooking the spinach in 3/4 cup of Madeira wine. I can't find any around here (very rural area), and I'm wondering what would be a good substitute. I am hoping a Chardonnay would work. TIA

I can't give you the scoop on Madeira wine (I think it's Portugese, but that's all I know), but half ruby port plus half dry red wine would probably be a reasonable substitute. Madeira is great in sauces; you might consider buying some!

Oh, I assumed it was a white wine because the recipe is one of those lasagnas with a white sauce. I wish I could find some, but none of the local stores have any.

You might try ordering it online (do it during the winter, when it's cold!).

yes, madeira is a portuguese red dessert wine (fom the island of Madeira), very sweet. So I guess any sweet wine will do.

Yes, I did an Internet search and now I'm up on Madeira wine
I didn't end up using it in the recipe, though. Spinach and sweet wine lasagna with a mushroom cream sauce didn't sound like something that would go over very well with the folks I was cooking for that night. Maybe next time.
Thanks!
Steph
