How many 2 1/2 year old boys ... - Page 2

My son is 3 years, 10 months. He's in size 5 right now with size 12 feet. At 3.5 he was in 4T. Not sure about his height/weight though. We're not overly tall people here. I'm 5'8" and my DH is 6'1".

For some reason my gut is telling me your son is probably a little over 3. Just a gut thing, though.
If I were you I'd get some books on child development and try and use that to guess with. There are distince cognitive developments that 99% of kids develop at certain ages. Those seem to be much more universal than size or motor skills, which can vary widely.

My ds has been in 4T shirts for a while now and he just turned 2. He is in about size 9 shoes. He also is pretty coordinated, verbal, and mature. My older ds was also big and was often mistaken for a 2 yo well before his first birthday based on his abilities and fine motor skills.

my 'little' guy is 31 months--almost 32. He is 42lbs.
I am not sure how tall he is, but he is taller than the other 2.5 year olds I see around.
He is in size 11 shoes (although can wear some 10.5's and some 11.5's...all depends on the cut of the shoe!)
He just outgrew most of his 4T pants--especially stuff like oshkosh.
I have some boys size small pants that are long on him, but otherwise fit great, and don't look big at all.
He is also in 5's for shirts. 4's are just too short and small across his shoulders.

But mind you, these are the clothes his brother was wearing when he was 4.

It is so hard to guess a child's age by their size alone.
I would go by milestones--speech, dexterity, interests (building with blocks vs just stacking them--stuff like that)
but even with that, you can be so far off on age--ds1 was lightyears ahead in speech and interests, but way behind in motor skills....

gah...guess that isn't much help, is it?

Thanks, everyone. I guess there's really not much of a way to tell. We talked to the pediatrician about a bone age, but it's only accurate to within 8 months either way, so it wouldn't help much. Plus, I don't want to subject him to unnecessary x-rays. It's mainly for my own curiosity that I want to know.

Namaste!

I just checked my older kids' baby books out of curiosity....they were both 32 pounds and 36 inches tall at 2 years old. My babe was almost 36 inches and 30 pounds at his 18 month check up (he's in 3T clothing at 20 months).

The older two are now 4'11" and 84 pounds at 12 and 4'9" and 81 pounds at 10...small and average.

I think he sounds like a big boy, but about right on.

Hi I was just going to add that he sounds very very similiar to my son.
Silas is 40 or 41 inches, 34 lbs, and wears a 10/11 shoe. His hands are large. He is highly verbal and conversational.
My brother is 6'6", my dh is 6'4", I'm 5'11". He's going to be tall.
I think 2.5 could be bang on in terms of his age. How is he on the issue of potty training or transitions? These can be good indicators of age (if he's closer to three, he might be more capable of handling them.?) My son is just getting really good at transitioning between events and is not potty trained, seems to lack the physiological readiness at the point.)

My son was 37 in and 35 lbs at 2 1/2. He wore a size 4T from age 2 until age 4. He now wears a 5. He'll be 5 in January and is 43 lbs, 46 in tall. I would tend to believe the dentist. Aren't teeth a pretty accurate age predicter?

My son is 32 mos. and clothing sizes really vary, he can wear a 2T in some stuff but needs a 4T in others. Usually he wears a 3T, though, and a size 9 in shoes. He is 37" and 35 lbs. If I went by the child development charts (such as the one on the AAP website) to guess his age, I'd guess he was 4 or even 5. Those seem to really only give the minimum a child should be doing at each age. It sounds like he probably is 2.5, maybe closer to 3.

My son is rather small (he is the oldest in his class, but about middle for size even with kids 11 months younger and/or girls). He is, at 4 about 39" and 34 lbs. He just recently moved to a size 9 shoe and is not quite ready to move into a 4T.

That said, we know many, many boys who are/were bigger than him at 2.5. A good friend's son was 2 in February and he outweights my DS by a couple pounds and it barely shorter. DS's best friend who was 3 in February was 50 lbs at 2.5 (now, at 3.5 he is 45 ) and at least 42"

I didn't think the bone age was even that close. When my brother and I got braces we both had the wrist X-ray and measurements. They told us they were trying to find out our physical age, rather than chronological. Mine was about a year off and my brother's was 2 1/2 years off. Maybe it's because your son is younger? We were 12 1/2 and 10 1/2 at the time and they said we were 11 1/2 and 8.

In answer to the origional question, my son wears a 4T shirt and 3T pants. He's one of the smallest kids his age I know, at 28 lbs and 36 inches and size 6 foot. But my brother and I were the smallest kids in our class until puberty.

At 2.5, DS1 was 34 lbs. and 40 inches tall. Don't remember shoe size (though I think it was smaller than most listed here) and he wore 4T shirts and 3T pants (which I attribute partially to him being so thin, and partially to his body type which is very long in torso) His verbal skills were also excellent and people (including other parents of older kids and teachers) frequently guessed him to be in the 4 - 5 year range. Funny thing is, now that he is close to 4 yrs, people still guessed him to be in the 4 - 5 range.

My 2.5-year-old DS is in 4T shirts and 3T/4T pants depending on the size/style. His legs have always been a little shorter in clothing size than his torso. He is in size 10.5 shoes. I would say that he is a little on the tall side for his age. He's as big as the three-year-olds in our playgroup.
