hello all. well this is my first post in this forum so i thought an introduction would be in order.
maya mom to ian.
well the hard parts over, the introduction was easy. here's the hard part.
my mom and i have decided to homeschool my son. he is nine and in the 4th grade. and public and private schools just are not working. technically he is still enrolled at school because i dont know what to do next. we are not religious, the reasons we have decided to h.s are the enviroment at the schools here are not correct for him, he needs tons of physical stuff and doesnt like crowded places, the class rooms with 35 students just arent working, he has dyslexia/dysgraphia but has been advocating for himself to be homeschooled for several years. he is just overwhelmed with school, hurt and angry at past failures at schools and that the teachers, administration or whomever cant pay attention to him.

i made a list of things that i need to do to homeschool, for example
check out state laws in minnesota and fill out paper work.
organize a space with an area we can keep him schooling stuff.

what now? do i order a box from a company? which one?
do i sign him up for connections academy?
help! all you experienced mama's out there wanna help a newbie? please?
thank you so much.

First: Welcome and Congratulations on making this decision, it's so hard to take that first step.

Second: I STRONGLY urge you to look into and doing "DE-SCHOOLING" http://home-educate.com/unschooling/deschooling.htm http://www.homeschoolzone.com/faq/deschooling.htm just to give you an idea of what it is

Third: take this time to just chill and learn through living, but not searching out info unless he wants to.

another site you may wish to look into is http://www.avko.org/

Just remember, it may take up to 4+ months for your son to get interested in searching out new things to know...but in the mean time, there is nothing wrong in trips to the library, park, museum, having him help you weigh foods at the store, watching educational tv (unless you are tv free) using educational cdroms that are FUN if he likes and reading lots of books to him. The most important part of home educating is finding that wonderful little person and seeing the joy in even the smallest of things (like a catapiller pooping and your childs reaction to that).

During our de-schooling process i learned a LOT about what my son had to endure much much more than i ever thought and he enver opened up and said so until we did that process. Give him time, have great down time while baking/cooking, playing music/cards/games. Relax, it WILL be ok, take it one day at a time and no rushing.

I just want to say WELCOME!!! I am new to homeschooling: we are on week number 8 so I will leave you to the experts. I usually read these posts then save everyone's suggested web pages to read over when I am done reading the board!
