An expirience in the maternity store today...ughhh

Was looking for bras and saw Jenny McCarthy's book. I made a comment to the sales person "I can't believe you guys sell this, it's so horrible" (most of the books there were good pro-bfing etc) and she said "Oh I thought it was funny".

I blinked.

"She said she circumcised her son to have a PRETTY PENIS. That's really gross to me"
"Oh yeah I didn't like that part either. I circumcised my sons but not for THAT reason, it was the health reasons"

I CRINGE. She was older so it was in a time with less information but I still cringed. Conversation goes on casually, I mention Medicaid not covering it anymore.

"Why not?"
"Oh it's considered cosmetic now"
"What about the health reasons, did they just suddenly go away?"

At this point she was a bit peeved.

"Yes, actually, they did. It's all been basically disproven. No one else in the world does it anymore -- we spend a lot of time in the UK, in fact the baby is a citizen, and it's not even an option there"
"Really?"
"Yeah, like here's an example. You know they say lower UTIs?"
"Yeah..."
"Well that's a load of garbage. They used intact preemies versus full term circumcised neonates"
"Aw that's terrible, you can't do that...I wonder why --"
"Money. It's a billion dollar a year industry. $400+ a pop, what do you expect?"

She just agreed and that was about the end of it. But ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I am NEVER shopping in a maternity store again, I *HATE* conversations like that.

I think you did rather well there actually. Congratulations.

Well done, I would have probably just mumbled something to myself and walked out, hopefully you have planted a seed that will stop her grandsons being mutilated for "health reasons"

Good for you for spreading the truth and not being offensive.

I agree with the other posters. You did an excellent job of speaking to her.

wow, i'm impressed. i always end up sputtering and defensive and then i just leave without educating anyone. you did well!

You did great! And just think, she works in a maternity store, she may talk to other pregnant mamas....

I'm fairly confident that the saleswoman didn't choose the inventory, so why bring up your dislike of the book? The saleslady porbably wanted to sell you a few nursing bras. Instead, you began to debate with her? Why? if you didn't like the book, you should have just left the store.

The saleslady may not have chosen the inventory, but she does represent the store. I think you did a great job!

WHAT??? :
She didn't "begin a debate" with the salesperson, she educated her well and gently. She is certainly entitled to inform any salesperson of her dislike of that book or any other product sold in the store. A salesperson is a representative of the store, and part of the job is listening to customer comments and complaints.

ANY opportunity to educate on circumcision the way the OP did should be taken!!

You did really good!! Well, I for one am proud of you.

Maybe she will recommend the book be pulled..depending on the store and how it is managed...it sounded like she was interested in what you were saying.

I thought you did a great job of expressing your opinion and sharing info. without being disrespectful or rude to them. Thanks!

You did a great job!! Wow!

I see that completely as educating and not debating. Way to go!!

Because she saw me looking at the books and it came up? I didn't realise that calmly discussing that the health benefits stuff was a myth was starting a debate. I didn't use the word mutilation, I didn't say it was cruel, nothing.

Thanks to everyone else
