My name is Brinda, I'm new here, but not new to messageboards. This is my 5th pregnancy and I'm due 5/27/06. This should be a very interesting journey for me. My first two were girls and born at 35 weeks, I m/c my third around 10-11 weeks, and my son was born at 31 weeks after being told the entire pregnancy I would miscarry or he would not survive. After a 2 weeks hospital stay for PTL and cervical funneling, my water broke (29 weeks) and I had to go on mag. It was funny, tho, because I had a catheter, and the nurse had just moved it because it had gotten yanked too low causing some leaking. When I still felt it 5 minutes later, that's when we found it was actually my water. Mag didn't help and starting shutting my body down, so I had to go off. Luckily, though, labor slowly decreased over several hours. By miracle, my water resealed and a bio-physical profile showed that I still maintained a normal water level. 2 weeks later my water broke again, and I delivered. He spent 4 weeks in the hospital with a roller-coaster ride, but he finally came home.
I have been to see my OB Friday, and he confirmed my due date and uterine size. I am supposed to make sure that my prenatal contains essential fatty acids (especially Omega-3's) because there is some thought that they help calm an irritable uterus, which is what I have. I am also to see my peri in two weeks where I will have my first of many u/s's and to determine whether a cerclage is necessary. We will also discuss gameplan, though I've been told to prepare for a hospital stay sooner than at 27 weeks like last time. Starting at 18 weeks I will see my peri one week, and my OB the next. They are including me in a pre-term labor study on whether progesterone suppositories will help prolong pregnancy to allow those of us with PTL's to get further along in pregnancy. I'm excited to be a part of the study, but sad that I will not know if I'm getting the medicine or the control, since it's a double-blind study.
I was also taking Depakote when I found out I was pregnant, so there is great concern that I am at higher risk for the baby having spina bifida since it causes folic acid to be leeched out of the system. So, I have to have the AFP done this time, which I declined in earlier pregnancies.
I'd love to have a normal pregnancy, but unfortunately it's just not for me.
