co-sleeping DS is leaking

Thread Starter
We co-sleep with 17 month old DS. In the summer he just sleeps in a diaper. It is easy to sneak in a diaper change while he is still sleeping. Now in the winter. He sleeps in PJs either a one piece or a two piece. He doen't like covers so I need to fress him warmly at night. Therefore, It is difficult to sneak in a diaper change without waking him.

I used to use tushies diapers but those don't absorb as well as the other diapers with gel in them.

What to do--change him during the night and risk him being up for a while? Keep him in his diaper and hope it doesn't leak? (which is what I am currently doing) Find a super absorbant diaper with gel? I'm not crazy about any of these options.

What do other co-sleeping mamas do? Do babies who sleep on their own leak as well?

Any suggestions wold be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Lori

Ah, I have a solution. Some may call me barbaric, but I get to sleep all night w/o even sitting up. My son stopped pooping at night at 1 mos. and now I put on the next size up diaper right at bedtime and it lasts until am. I also dress him in a long sleeze onesie and no pants. This way IF he does leak at all, it' s much easier to change him. I also have a complete little station set up by my head; ie. dipes, wipes, clothes, and a TV remote to give me light.

You jmight want to head over to the diapering forum if you're interested in using cloth at all.....there are a lot of ideas for keeping baby dry at night.

I was having the same leak problem with my 20 month old until I put him to sleep completely naked with no diaper at all. The first 2 or 3 nights he peed in the bed of course, but I would just move over to a dry spot for the remainder of the night. After a few nights he just stopped wetting the bed! In the morning I ask if he wants to go potty, he gives me an enthusiastic yes and that's that.

Have you thought about cloth diapering? Head on over to the diapering forum, the ladies there are tons of help and can help you find something that won't leak.

We use cloth but ds2 still leaks out of his night diapers occasionally. I started using soaker pants as pajama bottoms and the bed does not get wet.

I agree that you may want to give cloth a try. DD rarely leaks in her cloth at night.

Cloth was my solution! That's what brought me to MDC in the first place... couldn't keep kid and bed dry at night. Definitely head over to the Diapering forum. They got me started. We cloth diaper full time now.

Our nighttime solution turned out to be a Large Fuzzi Bunz diaper stuffed with three different stuffers. We haven't had a leak in forever. Best of luck.

Our solution is a bit unorthodox, but here goes...we cloth diaper and I'm a big fan of cloth, but at night we now use a disposable dipe toped with a prefold and one of her diaper covers. We tried layering with cloth and we tried using a disposable (with the gel) but both were leaking through and/or becoming insanely bulky. With this combo the disposable catches most of the volume and the leaks are absorbed by the prefold (with the damp being contained by the cover). It's worked better than I had expected and has cut down on my dd's late night crying jags (she REALLY hates to wake up wet!).

Of course, we also have a sheet of PUL that covers the upper portion of our bed so that if she does leak out at least we don't have to worry about wet sheets...we just fold the PUL over and back to sleep we go!
