UPDATE! (Not So Natural!) Help Me with Hair Dye Issue!

WHAT DO I DO?? Please advice me on my hair. I don't want to "F" it up.

Okay, so I have my weaknesses. One of them is my for being a redhead. I am naturally a redhead, but my hair is fickle and sometimes it's lovely, sometimes it's icky - color-wise.

So, I had this brilliant : idea to dye my hair a dark brunette back in the spring. I did it with a #2 temp dye. I look like an idiot as a brunette. I waited and hoped and washed and it washed out, some. I gave up waiting and sometime during the summer, I dyed it red. You could still see some of the old brown under there, the most of my hair being a darker red then the new growth, about 1.5" at the top. So, that was #3 permanent.

Fast forward to today. My hair is not the lovely red it was pre-baby. It's a dull reddish now. (Or, at least the top 2" is a dull reddish. After that, it's redder for about 1.5" and then dark red/brown for the remaining length to my shoulders.)

Let's see....
1.) I don't want to destroy my hair.
2.) I'm trying to grow it out, so I want to be gentle.
3.) It looks like hell and I need desperate help to make it look decent, preferably one basic overall red.

I have a box of Garnier hair color in the bathroom. It's calling my name. http://www.garnierusa.com/img/00000/...434-8_pack.jpg

Should I use that? Or, should I go to a salon, a good one? If I went to a salon, what could they do better than I can do at home?

ACK!!! I just want my hair back!!!!!

Please go to the salon, and always go to a good salon! they may be able to strip your lenghts a little bit just to get it closer to your natural and then through on a semi permanent color something close to your natural but with a little more jazz to it so it doesn't look so dull.

yeah, you should probably go to a salon if you want it done right. Then if it's not right, you complain and make them fix it.

What *I* would do is I'd probably just cut it off real real short and wait for it to grow in. But my hair grows really fast, like I had obvious roots showing just a week after I dyed it the last time! It only took me two years to go from shoulder length to having waist-length hair.

Thanks for the advice.

I am just now growing it out from a very short pixie cut and would prefer not to start over, if I don't have to. Otherwise, I would. I'm always cutting it short, growing it out. Getting sick of it one way, changing it back. I'm at the "desperate for it to get long" stage, though. It grows very quickly. I was about 6 months pregnant when I cut it all off. It has now been cut or trimmed several times and is able to go into a ponytail. Jett is 10 months old, for the record.

I went to a good salon. Oooo, a way-nice spa! They used a bit of color remover, then did "foil" with blondish and red highlights. It looks really awesome. I had noooo intention of doing that when I went in, but it looks REALLY great. I love it.

I'd take a picture, but eh....I look like a total slob today.

I am sure it looks lovely, but for ongoing maintenance have you considered Henna? It makes all sorts of lovely shades of red and it is not full of potentially dangerous toxins.

I use vegetable dye some, too.

Gretchen, I've had terrible luck with henna in the past. Apparently, I have very 'difficult', or 'uncooperative' hair.

I spend sooooo much of my life obsessing over natural alternatives, it's tough to give in on this point and I would definitely prefer natural color. It just doesn't seem to work out well, though.

I don't really plan to have much done for maintenance, if anything. I just wanted to get away from the way it looked before. What they did was awesome, but fairly natural looking and should grow out without looking hideous.

If you ever want to go all red in the future and use all natural color, check this out. http://www.hennaforhair.com/

Look at the mixes section for tons of pics.

I'm finally ready to do something else with my hair, after the pro-salon deal.

I am going to henna it this time....I want it to look like this chick:

I've been using henna for a while now, and I'm just thrilled! I've been a semi-real redhead for years now, and the henna is the only thing I've ever used that doesn't fade back to brown within a month or so. That said, I don't use pre-made storebought "mixes" for henna, I order the body-art quality stuff from www.hennaforhair.com and I've had zero issues with it. No green, orange, or otherwise weird hair.

I've been using henna for over a year now, but sometimes I still have a sort of "chemical" mentality. Meaning, I'll henna my hair and think, "Oh, it's so pretty. Too bad it'll fade." And then I'll remember it's henna and that it won't and then I get all excited about that.

I'm really a dork, I know.

Any pics of you henna mamas? I'd LOVE to see!

I'll get one posted as soon as I can. I used the store bought henna, not body quality so I don't think my color is as intense as some of the ones pictured on henna for hair. But, I am happy with it.
