1st midwife appointment

sorry to be awol ... i've had a flaky internet connection recently, and i'm now catching up.

i had my first appointment last thursday. nothing much, except to show up and say "hi, i'm pregnant." and for her to say, "okay." however, since i tested + so early and apparently her little poke on my belly led her to think my uterus was big (and since i showed her my charts, so she knew i was absolutely right on dates), she decided to do a quick ultrasound. and everything looks great ... not much to see, but there is a sac that measures right on, and i have a little picture of the sac with a little tiny bean in it to look at.

no tests, no blood, no peeing in or on anything ... just a quick happy visit. i'll see her again in two weeks.

I thought you were going to say you're having twins!!

Yay for a good appointment

Mine is Thursday.

Yay! I don't have my first midwife appointment until December 2. I'm sure November is going to feel like a looong month!

Maybe it's California thing, because mine won't see me until 9 weeks either. I'll have to live vicariously through the rest of you until then.

Aw man, I thought I had it all figured out!

My midwife just said there's no reason to be seen earlier--that there's nothing they would need to do. She said, "I know people who are pregnant for the first time want to come in and get it all started, but there's nothing to do!"

I feel like having that appointment will make the whole thing seem more official. So I'm excited to go, but I guess I'll just wait.

socalgirl - i get it - there isn't anything to do, really. for me, my midwife wanted to see me earlier, because i had a m/c this time last year at 10.5 wks, and if things look ilke they're going that way again, we would order testing to see what was going on for future reference.

I hear ya SoCalGirl. I feel like now that the initial excitement of my is over, and I don't have any symptoms, and I'm not showing I'm beginning to feel like I imagined it! I check my pregnancy tests everyday! I almost want to test again......

I don't even have a midwife lined up yet because of some insurance issues and I feel worried about that, but at 5 weeks I guess I have a few more before they will want to see me anyway.

*I* could have written that! I probably would test again except that I can't bring myself to spend all the $$$ on the drugstore tests. (Before I had ordered a set of 5 cheapies from saveontests.com, but I've gone through them all now.) I just keep telling myself that if I *weren't* pregnant, I'd get my period, and I haven't, so it must be real.

I also had insurance worries--we just moved here for my husband's job, so our insurance is new to us, the doctors here are all new to us, etc. etc. This is the first time either of us will see a doctor on this new insurance. I spent a few days worried about it all after I got my +, but actually what helped the most was calling the birth center where I want to do it. They helped me navigate the maze of insurance b.s. pretty easily and figure out what I had to do to switch to the right PCP (I'm on an HMO) so I could be referred to them. Besides making the whole insurance ordeal less scary for me, the people I talked to there were SO helpful in taking time to explain everything to me--it made me feel good about the birth center I chose.

Anyway good luck on getting your insurance stuff sorted out. I can totally sympathize with how daunting it can seem when so many other people already have a doc or midwife they can just call up and say, "Hey, I'm pregnant, when do you want to see me?"

I just saw this message SoCalGirl! I'm so glad that you found a nice voice on the other end of the phone! I just called the office of my potential midwife and the lady was real nice too! I've worked out the insurance (hopefully) and I'm on a PPO so that makes it easy. Up until a few months ago I had an HMO and I found it to be so annoying!

Anyway, my appt is November 28th and I have a silly question. Is it normal to bring your hubby to the first appointment? I want him to go with me because he's in on it too........

i'm in Alabama, the few midwives here are underground or work over the stateline (in that case you go to them, no homebirth) i won't see mine until i'm past my 1st tri. there isn't much she can do before that. she lives 3 hours away. she delivers babies all over the state.

Definitely bring him if you want him there. The more he knows the better it is.

Do you mind if I ask who you're using, I'm in the Bay Area too and in the process of interviewing midwives? PM me if you'd rather. I'm so confused! Glad to hear your appointment went well.

I had my 1st appt yesterday and got to see my little sesame seed, too. Quite a surprise. Whole thing beating furiously like a little crazy heart.

Here in Singapore (just moved from the U.S. a few months ago) our medical insurance doesn't cover ANYTHING pregnancy or birth related. Gave DH and I quite a shock, since we didn't really find out till AFTER we got pg. But luckily, (quality) healthcare here is pretty cheap (compared to U.S.). The sono yesterday was only $40 sing dollars, which would be about $25 U.S. dollars.

A very cool feeling! Although it looks like I'm having a seahorse, not a human.

I was a little freaked, when I discovered how much most docs (and the general public) here view pregnancy as an illness. It's WAY worse than the U.S. But I finally found the only doula group here, and they recommended my OB (they don't do midwives here, to the best of my knowledge). I take a taxi to the other side of the city for my appt's, but it's sooooo worth it!
