Still Eating To Live - November - Page 3

Vermonttaylors I'm right there with you, LOL! I am also going to go at it with a more 90/10 philosophy. I'd rather almost stick with it for a long time than not stick with it at all, so I am going for the oatmeal in the morning, a cup of coffee with soy milk, and then I am going to use the dressing from the book - the Annie's no fat yogurt dill dressing - on my salads. I just like a creamy dressing, and it is still pretty low cal. I'll let you guys know if my slight modification still allows me to lose weight, I think it will! I don't think I am addicted to coffee, but I just really like it as part of my morning, it makes me happy, so I'm going for it!

Ok, so I checked "the source" on the status of pumpkins, etc. Here it is directly from E2L, from "Beware of teh starchy vegetable":

Quote:
For the 6-Week plan, limit cooked, high-starch grains and vegs to one cup a day. Consider any vegetable that is not green to be a high-starch vegetable (the main exceptions to this rule are eggplant, peppers, onions, and mushrooms). ... make most of your starch consumption from starch vegetables -- such as butternut or acorn squash, corn, turnips, parsnips, rutabagas, cooked carrots, sweet and white potatoes -- rather than starchy grains. ... Restricting the portion size of rice, potato, and other starchy vegetables to one serving is not necessary for everybody to lose weight on the Life Plan, only for those whose metabolism makes it difficult to lose weight.
So I am assuming that pumpkin is a starch veggie.

Some good news -- I was looking for some different pants to wear today instead of the few that I have been in lately, and tried a few from my closet. Some were still too tight in the belly for my personal comfort, but I did find a pair of jeans that I didn't even remember I had and they fit!

And I ordered the book "Lose the Mummy Tummy." Feeling the need to tackle that. Maybe it will even help with my back pain that translates into hip/glut pain that is keeping me from running. The weathere here has been really nice. It would have been so nice to be out running in it! Oh well, all in good time.

Last night I ate a salad for dinner and I did have some air popped popcorn later. Overall not a bad eating day. Today I had fruit salad w/ not even a 1/4 cup of soy yogurt on top. Also it had wheat germ, ground flax seeds and a small amount of walnuts in it.

Yes, I'd say pumpkin is a starchy veg. I will be eating more starchy veggies because 'tis the season for them but will be cutting down on other starches.

Just woke up (at 3:30 am) craving some fruit, but all I could find was one single pear. Guess I should have gone shopping yesterday. I did get my raw greens for dinner but now there aren't any left. There's other food here but actually I don't feel like eating any of it - although I certainly have eaten plenty of off-program stuff at various times and it hasn't harmed me so very much. Oh well. Not too many places around here to get fruit at 4AM!

Hopefully I will be able to get back to sleep! I certainly never thought I would be woken in the middle of the night with a craving for fruit. Hmm - maybe I have something in the car.

Ombra*luna, did you ever find any fruit?

I also woke up in the middle of the night last night and couldn't get back to sleep. Hmmm...

I haven't lost anymore weight in the past three days, in fact in total I've only lost five. I was hoping to see the dramatic results that everybody else talks about, but I am pretty happy overall. I think my clothes are fitting better. I measured my waist yesterday and the tape measure says I lost 2 inches! In five days? I think I must have measured myself wrong in the first place. That just doesn't seeem right to me.

Well I'm off to the grocery store. Anybody else feel guilty about spending so much money on healthy food? It's definitely cheaper to eat junk food all the time. I've started working extra hours to make up for the money I spend.

It's been kind of quiet the last couple of days, I hope everyone is doing all right...

ombraluna - You crack me up.

serena - I think 5 lb loss in the first week is dramatic. It will continue to come off...I only lost 4 the first week and am now down 25 in 3 months. So keep at it.

Yesterday was my anniversary so I ate not-so-good, but not so bad, either. It's so funny to me that my bad days are now what my good days used to be.

hi everyone

well, as expected, not so much eating to live for me this weekend. i had pizza friday night and felt like i was eating to suffer after that - so heavy! such an unpleasant feeling. yesterday i stayed vegan but had potato chips - not the pringles i originally put in the basket, these were healthier than that...today i haven't had anything bad but not too much good stuff either. dp arrives home in a couple of hours and we'll have big salad.

it's hard to manage the salads/fine healthy food while acting the single parent! where do people find time? i generally leave most of the cooking up to dp and i do the foraging for vegetation during the day.

serena, i've had mini-plateaus in amongst the weight loss. you're grand, don't worry about it. isomom's right, 5 lbs in a week is a lot. dp was at the same weight for 10 days or something and i think he was ready to crack. we went away, he drank some pints, came back and recommitted himself. it seems that really focusing on the pound of fresh/pound of cooked veg is key for the weight to come off.

moonshine, you'll have to let us know about the mummy tummy book. i try to remember to hold my tum in while i'm picking up ds but don't always... and congrats on unearthing old clothes! i've done a tiny bit of that but i'm looking forward to more. although i had a flash today that it's going to be ages before i wear grown up clothes. i have long sleeve t-shirts that ds is pulling to pieces, especially the neck. oh well.

isomom, happy anniversary!

officially this is our sixth week of e2l. i think we might try the strict version for an extra two weeks, just because we had that week away and i know dp wasn't on plan at all this weekend.

i hope everyone has a great week!

Hi Everyone,

Happy Anniversary Isosmom, and Happy Birthday too? I remember you said you were thinking of going to Millenium for your birthday. Today is my birthday and we went to Vegetarian House in San Jose. I called Cafe Abundance in SF but they said it was really hard to get in on Saturday night, so I will save it for another time. Veg House was really cool, and I liked that they had soy ice cream

Cheers,
CurlyTop

Hey all. I started E2L nine months ago and had to modify it quite a bit due to food allergies (kiddos, mainly) I did, however lose 55 pounds, even with the modifications. I love this plan. Has anyone picked up his new book yet? It wasn't vastly different, but interesting nonetheless. Good to see you all here!

elisabeth, thank you for your note. it's great to see folks who do this long term and have good results.

Hi! Can someone help me with this? I am very interested in this way of life! I am still exploring, and can't imagine really eating like this, even though I would like to. Has anyone not done the 6 week plan, and just started with the life plan--or started more slowly?? Does chaning slowly help to not have all of the detox. effects?? Is it possible to slowly change your diet to one like this??

Thansk for any help!!

Hello All,

I'm a new mama. My little boy is three months old. I am not at all happy with my weight although I only put on the "recommended" number of pounds. The weight is not coming off even though I am exclusively breastfeeding. Maybe I should be a little more patient but I ran across this book Eat to Live and it interested me. I've been a vegan for a while and recently added back eggs three times a week and organic yogurt three times a week as well as salmon twice a month as well as cod liver oil over concerns about vitamin B12, A, D, omega 3/DHA. While as a strict vegan, though, I was overweight and I was eating a lot of vegetables and fruits--limited processed foods although I'm guilty of eating potatoes. However, most of my grains were things like couscous, bulghur wheat, brown rice, whole wheat breads, etc. I'm 5'2" and before pregnancy, I was 145 lbs. Now I'm 160 lbs. I know that I can't do any rapid weight loss because I am nursing but 1 to 2 lbs. a week would be great. Anyway, long story short, what I want is you ladies to tell me how Eat to Live is revolutionary. I have the book here and I'm just skimming it but it doesn't seem to offer anything more than what I have already done or what I am doing. My diet if far from the SAD. Is it just that I need to add exercise (which I know I need to do)? What I'm saying is that I have such limited time to do reading these days and I want to make sure that the book will offer me something new or something that will work. Thanks a million!

rootzdawa - I, too ate what I considered well before starting etl. I have been veg forever, was far from SAD as well. What was different, and what worked for me, with etl was the decrease in starches, huge for me, and the increase, tenfold of fruits and veggies. I was getting most of my calories from starches and not so much from fruits and veggies. Cutting out all sugar was huge for me as well. I never ate a lot, but now I would consider it a lot. It is definatley worth checking out, I was skeptical, too. I just commited to the 6 weeks just to see if I could do it. I'm glad I have and now, 3 months later, have a totally different concept of healthy eating.

hiya mamas

hope everyone is doing well and eating healthy. i'm hit or miss the past couple of days but broke through to the 150s decade on the scale. i shouldn't celebrate -- i wouldn't have a few years ago! -- but i feel like i'm moving in the right direction.

today i had a smoothie for brekkie, a morrocan salad for lunch and i'm going to have big salad and some chana masala for dinner. i made up the chana and, of course, right at the stage where everything could go wrong ds started shouting from bed. but it's grand.

rootzdawa, i have had very good results with e2l so far. i was veg too but ate soooo much dairy (cheese cheese cheese yoghurt and some more cheese with that) and was eating a fair few potatoes. anyway, after nursing exclusively for six months i was sure that i would lose weight. nope -- i weighed the same at six months postpartum as at two months postpartum. i was sad and very unhappy with my weight. i wasn't happy with what i was eating either. so this has been great for me.

angelamom, i had the detox nastiness for a day or so and then started to feel better. i think the six week plan is good for me! i know i needed a radical change (throw out all that cheese) and six weeks of eating very very well is a good way to indicate commitment, i guess. good luck!
Ooooooh, do you wanna share your recipe for chana masala? I know it's super easy, but I can never get quite the way I want it...
i used the one on fatfree vegan recipes:

http://www.fatfreevegan.com/beans/chana.shtml

but i used too many chickpeas, so not as spicy as i'd like it. it was yum with a salad!

Eat to live makes sense I I know I can be thin, full, AND healthy!!! I love eat live!!! there are also testimonials and more info on that site...But, reading the whole book makes sense of all the craziness in american eating!!! I'll post a review of the video after I get it and watch it!!
I hope this helped! Jennifer

Hello all, I've been quiet but I'm still following plan and doing great. I haven't lost any more weight, but I can tell that I'm toning up a little which is fine by me, since I wasn't obese in the first place, just chubby. I found a site I was happy to read, made me feel ten times better about what I'm doing. Check it out:
http://www.ejnet.org/dioxin/
Its about carcinogens in meat and animal products, very interesting. I don't know if clicking on this link will take you there or if you have to type it in, I've not figured that out yet.

Raeinparis-I have been thinking about you when I hear all these news stories about what is going on in France right now. I hope you are far away from it.

Angelamom25- I did not really have any detox symptoms at all and I was not veg before I started, I ate like the normal overweight American. It is definitely worth a try. I am on my second week and it just gets easier all the time.

Well, not to more, but my dh is taking me out on a date this Friday night to a VERY nice restaurant. I don't know if they have any vegan dishes, they usually only serve 4 or 5 dishes a night and you pick from those. I really don't want to cheat, I think it will put me in a bad frame of mind about the whole thing, but I don't know if there's much there I can eat. Any suggestions? I don't really feel comfortable calling them...
