Nursing bra question

OK, here's a question for those of you who've done this before. How do you know what size nursing bra to buy? I've gone from a B cup to a C, but I'm thinking that things might get a little hairy once my milk comes in. I don't want to get something too small, but I also don't want to overshoot it either. Any suggestions?

There is no magic way to know what size you will be when nursing, at least that I have figured out. With dd I just kept getting bigger during pg, then when the milk came--yikes! I would say wait until you are closer to due date to get a few, look for ones that are stretchy and/or adjustable. Then once your milk comes in get some more of styles you like in the new size. If you know the styles from the few you got in late pg then you can order online or have someone pick them up for you.

I also got two nursing bras in the size I am at now just so I can be comfortable and at some point I may be this size and nursing.

I struggled to find nursing bras I liked last time and never really found any I loved. I am hoping for better luck this time.

they say you go up once size from pregnancy to nursing. This was the case for me but I think everyone is different. I would buy the minimal till your milk comes in and you see what is comfortable and what types of clips you prefer.

If you are needing something to use now and later, you could buy something like a Bravado that stretches quite a bit. I think Blue Canoe are similar. Bravado sizes cover a range of 4 inches (2-3 bra sizes) and a couple of cup sizes. I just bought 2 myself. I may need some with one size larger cup for the early months of nursing, but I know these ones work well now and will eventually fit again. If you don't need anything right now or don't want a stretchy kind, then I think it's good to wait till later in pregnancy and don't buy too many in one size.

I wouldn't get too many nursing bras before the baby is born, because you won't know for sure what size you'll settle into...but generally I think a good guideline is that what size you are toward the end of the pg is about what size you'll be when your milk supply settles. When your milk first comes in, and for the first couple of weeks or so as your supply gets regulated to the baby's demand, you'll be much larger than at the end of the pg...but then things will even out a bit.

i would advise a first timer to wait until after the birth, and your milk has come in and nursing is well established. I basically went braless for the first 3-4 days after ds was born and once my milk was in and nursing was going well, I invested in bras that fit properly. It's okay to be braless for your babymoon, I spent most of my time resting.nursing on the couch or laying in bed nursing ds and I didn't need a bra for those days anyway.

good luck!

I was just the opposite, had to wear bras 24x7 the first couple weeks, for the support. My breasts were so huge, it felt like boulders had come to live on the front of my body.

In my case it wasn't the cup size (I had primary supply issues and was never engorged) but I gained so much weight the last month that the band size didn't fit anymore! I had bought a L+ bravado and it was too tight by the time the baby was born.

This time I have some extra stretchy blue canoe bras and the medela comfort bra which stretches every which way you can imagine, and I hope those will be enough as I've never experienced this "boulder" thing

I know it's a little early to be buying nursing bras BUT... If you happen to be interested in the Playtex Expectant Moments nursing bra, you can get a good deal right now. They are on sale "buy one get one half off" at onehanesplace.com, plus there is a coupon code you can use for an additional 15% off your order (code 69677)...PLUS, this website's regular price for this bra is only $16.99 which is less than the regular retail price anyway. So it's really like a triple discount! This is the style that I wore the entire 4 1/2+ years I was breastfeeding my first two kids, so obviously I found it comfy and very user-friendly (although not the most beautiful bra out there, admittedly...). I also just called their customer service number, and they have a very forgiving return policy - they said if it doesn't fit they will accept returns/exchanges even if it's several months from now (I specifically asked about ordering a nursing bra now and finding it doesn't fit once the baby is born in 3 mos or so and they said "no problem".) Just FYI!

I bought a nursing bra my last week of pregnancy with dd, I think it was a dd. It didn't fit at all when my milk came in, I think I ended up wearing a G cup. This time I plan to wear sleep/leisure bras until my milk is in and settled down, and then go get fitted. There are several examples of these at www.motherwear.com
