cleaning the top of the stove

How the heck do I do this?? I don't mean the stove-top, I mean that part at the back that's about 4 or inches inches up..

I haven't cleaned mine, well ever : and it's disgusting!!! How can I get this cleaned?? I've been scrubbing and scrubbing and am making little headway... The crud is caked on and I can only see a bit of actual metal peeking through the grime...

HELP!!!

Take a washcloth/papertowel/rag and moisten it with whatever cleaner you are using (use excess cleanser to make sure it is very wet). Make sure that the cloth/papertowel/rag is long enough to cover the entire length of the area to be cleaned. Put the moistened rag on the back and let it sit for an hour or two. The crud should come off much easier after that.

Vinegar works good to break through the crud!

That's what I use in my kitchen, vinegar..

Tried the first suggestion and helped some, but didn't do too much It's so gross, and I'm feeling down on myself for letting it get this way...

Don't be too hard on yourself! Just think of it as all the good home cooking.
BTW, mine is pretty hard to get/stay clean too. Even when it's clean it just doesn't LOOK clean. KWIM?

If it's greasy crud canola oil might work. It'll clean off other oils, then you clean up the canola oil fairly easily.

Ok don't laugh but in cases like this I found the only thing that helps is my DH's can of Citrol. Not honestly sure exactly what your supose to use it for. But its basically an air can that you can use to clean oil, dirt, or anything else. I think its for like in mechanic shops but it does wonders. I would definetly look for an automotive cleaner.

Thanks guys! I think I'm gonna run out tonight and try to find a cleaner to get this off... It's nasty, and well, bugging me alot..

Mine's been known to go a little too long between cleanings . . . ahem . . . : I spray it with a bunch of "409" or similar and leave it for a bit, wipe it off and spray again, repeat as needed.

ETA: my stove is black. I mean it came that way. I bought it b/c I thought it looked cool, but now I see that it's just absolute genius to make a black stove.

biokleen works for me..

I have a biokleen problem. It smells like grapefruit so I put it on everything.

I always start any job that looks like it might require scrubbing by soaking a kitchen towel in hot water and covering the area. I don't do much scrubbing.

Right now, I don't know if the area looks better or worse...lol It still looks gross, but um, I dunno, maybe not AS caked on now

Well if you want to step it up a notch - ammonia will take it off, it's just so yucky to work with. You could use windex and let it sit, but 2:1 water/ammonia will take off any grime.

steam cleaner all the way...makes it much easier to break up old grease. if you don't have one, perhaps you could borrow from a friend? after the first thorough cleaning, it's easy to stay on top of the job by just wiping regularly with vinegar/water.

I'd suggest baking soda with some dish detergent, and a good scrubby sponge.

what about a baking soda paste? I make that, and smear it on the *inside* of my oven, and it seems to work...might be worth a try!

I'm still trying to get this thing cleaned better! Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I don't have baking soda, but it's the next thing on my list to try
