Your First Purchases - Page 2

Ok, guys, I stayed up WAAAAY too late last night reading tons of threads in that Family Bed section. (Thanks for pointing me to that, paisley!) Ack! There is so much I don't know about having a baby and being a mom! I guess it's good that pregnancy is 9+ months--gives us plenty of time to learn all about this stuff.

for all you first timers- just remember everyone can give you advice (including little old opinionated me ) but only you can figure out through trial and error and following your heart after your baby is born what will truly work for you and your little family! you already have everything you need to be the perfect mother to your little one- trust your instincts.

That was really sweet, kate!
My husband was just telling me last night when we were discussing the amby hammock. Its all just trial and error because what works for one person doesn't work for another! I just what to do everything right!

sewaneecook- you're right! Oh, and my side of the family is pretty cool with natural parenting too. My mom did it back in the 80's so they are used to it, not that everyone subscribes to it, but it is not as much of a shock to them. And fortunately I have a cousin who is completely AP and when we move there next year she will be a great support system for me!

My research for today: rocking chairs. I hate to say it but I'm kind of a style snob and I have a serious aversion to those plaid gliders so I'm looking at a fiberglass herman miller modern rocking chair. Its gotta match my furniture! I found a vintage one on ebay for under $20 and I can make a cushion for it!

One of this things I'm worried about is the baby showers. Because I am into alternative parenting and no one is really understanding of that I am afraid that I will get far to many frilly, plastic, unnecessary things for baby! I'm going to be a real hag and only sign up for the big ticket items (like a breast pump, and carseat, jogging stroller) at babies r us and then email people links from WAHM sites to buy me stuff from. I hate to see people wasting their money on things I will not use!

.
You can also make an actual registry w/ stuff from any website that you want using
www.thingsiwant.com

I'm using it for dd this christmas & also as a registry for the new baby

This is a good thread! I haven't purchased anything except Pregnancy Tea, but I bought that before I found out. I just went to the Target gift registry and can't find anything I want aside from the big items (car seat, breast pump). They have some carriers/slings but I don't know if they are good brands or not. I don't think we will have to buy any clothes for awhile (the grandmas will be all over that), and the baby will probably just wear onesies at first (it is HOT here in July!). I AM looking at stocking up on dipes though. I've got to start researching that.

I am not going to go crazy on maternity clothes. I'm a grad student so thank goodness I don't have to wear nice clothes to work. I am already feeling like I don't fit into my clothes because I had to gain 10 lbs to ovulate. (actually I probably only needed to gain 5 but 10 magically jumped on).

I went shopping today and stopped into motherhood maternity and everything was HIDEOUS! So I went to Charlotte Russe and found a whole crapload of those extra long shirts in a size large and bought a bunch and then they had spring/summer dresses on sale for $5 a piece so I bought some flowy stretchy ones. I was so excited that when I got home I tried all my shirts on with a small pillow under them! They are going to work perfectly!
Its always ben hard for me to find shirts long enough for my torso, but I seem to have gotten pregnant at the right time because long shirts are magicly in fashion! So now I have to put them away for a few months till my belly gets bigger!

On cloth dipes...I had to learn my lesson the hard way on this one. I made a stash of flannel fitteds that worked great for ds1. By the time I was pg w/ ds2 I was had developed a nice collection that would get us through at least the first couple months. Before ds3 was born I developed a CD fetish and went all out on cute little nb CD's. Well, he ended up being a 10 lb turkey and it turned out that none, I mean NONE of the cute nb dipes fit. The 0 Kissaluvs- out. The nb wraps and prefolds- out. The small FB barely fit him. Dh even got some AIOs he liked in nb size. Those were out too. So, I ended up having a whole bunch of CD that I couldn't even use. This time I've got what I think we'll need for the first few weeks or so.

I wouldn't go overboard before the baby arrives. Just wait and see what you'll need once your little one is here. That way you won't waste $ on stuff you really aren't going to use that much. Its amazing how much "stuff" we're made to think we need when we're expecting a baby. All babies really need are two arms to hold them, a mama to nurse them, and a family to love them.

Have any of you birthed in a Binsi birthing skirt? I was thinking about that for this birth.
