LOS ANGELES - George Takei, who as helmsman Sulu steered the Starship Enterprise through three television seasons and six movies, has come out as a homosexual in the current issue of Frontiers, a biweekly Los Angeles magazine covering the gay and lesbian community.

Not really surprised but surprised the tabloids didn't say anything about his 18 year relationship some where along the way. They love this kinda thing.

I'll say the same thing I did when I found out my favorite teacher of five years was gay (and long-time partnered - and I had to find out by reading the bloody paper!):

1) That's so awesome that we have another fantastic role model, someone who is standing up for what is right and good in this universe (and as a trekkie who's always been somewhat ashamed of the limited portrayal of non-heterosexual lives in that universe, I think this is just extra cool), and

2) What the hell took him so long?? At the same time I'm overjoyed to hear another vocal gay celeb and proud of him for taking that step, I'm so annoyed and frustrated that he felt he had to be closetted for so long.

Ah well. He's out now, and using his celeb status to highlight the, the, ickiness of what Ahnold's doing in my home state of CA, so that's good.
