Woodstove smoking--any suggestions? - Page 2

Do you know to open the flue when you open the door to the stove? If you don't open it, your house WILL fill with smoke.

Also, chimney sweeps arent' cheap but ARE a nescessity! Get it swpet. I'd ask teh landlord since it's a safety issue. Even if you pay, your savings wi8ll make up for it.

Our chimney sweep this fall was about $70.

I was also going to ask if the flue was open or closed. If we leave the flue closed and open the stove, the house fills with smoke quickly. Also, when we are lighting the stove, I notice that if the left door is open, smoke will come in the house, if the left door is closed and the right door is open or open only a crack, no problems. I can't think that smoke in your house is a good thing. I would open some windows to let in fresh air if it gets smoky in there.

Thanks, mamas, for all of your wise advice--hopefully this thread will be a helpful surprise to someone who needs it. We, however, moved out of that house a year after I started this thread . . . so the woodstove is someone else's problem now!

Yes, ma'am--we've got a lovely gas furnace now that works a treat. However, this time we OWN the house (or rather, the bank owns it and kindly lets us live in it), so if anything happens to the furnace it is on our heads to fix it. (*knocks wood*)
