Fleece makes great breathable outers, but it won't be as waterproof as PUL. If your pocket insert gets totally soaked and your baby is in a sling or in the car seat you can have compression wicking where the fleece outer can get a bit damp. But fleece is still great for using around the house and even going out as long as you change your baby every few hours (if they pee a lot!) I buy my no-pill fleece from Walmart, Hancocks, or Joann's. Just buy the thicker stuff and it should work fine. I try to blow through it, if I meet some resistance it will probably make a good outer. I also ordered some thin Windpro from www.onestopdiapershop.com and I love it. It is super thin and soft yet works as well as the thick stuff. It was $11 a yard, and I can make 8 pockets with it. Pretty good deal.
I love Joann's microfleece. I only buy the solids, but I think the prints should work. That stuff stays soft and is really pretty.
PUL you have to order on-line. I would suggest going to www.diapercuts.com . The owner is sooo nice and she ships super fast. My Mom just ordered some PUL for her and it was $7/yard for 60 inches and it is so silky and beautiful. She has great ratings also.
If I were starting over I would do some PUL and some fleece. PUL for traveling out and about, and fleece for when we stay at home and for night.
I also ordered some cotton velour from www.onestopdiapershop.com and I plan on making some plain cotton fitted diapers (velour outer and inner) and use them under fleece pants. Velour is so soft, but it does get super wet so it is not so good when you want an AIO pocket since it might cause wicking to the outside. But I might try some fleece/velour pockets anyway since I have made fleece/flannel ones and they work without wicking for a few hours. But the flannel gets a bit worn and not so soft. I LOVE the feeling of this velour.
Any more questions and I am here! You are going to get so addicted!
And if you have some spare money and want to save some time, think about ordering a pattern. It is so much easier and you will have nice pockets right away. As you know I love the fitted pocket from www.darlingdiapers.com .
