Ugh... will have to unsew...

I was making a baby blanket fitted today from the 4th revision of the pattern I've been drafting. Things were going ok. I sewed in a soaker (out of various sized pieces - kind of a franken-diaper ), then sewed the inner and outer bodies together. I used Lastin for the first time in a diaper, and only had to redo both sides. But finally got it figured out. Then I turned the diaper rightside out to check how things were going before I did the back waist elastic. Then I realized that yes, it really does matter if the sewn in soaker is going into the seam allowance.

So now when I have it rightside out, the inside portion won't lay flat, and the diaper is basically unuseable (without causing discomfort to my DS).

I guess I'll be unsewing to get that soaker pad out and make it narrower. : The funny thing is that when I was sewing it in, I was thinking it might be a problem. Ugh!

is it turning in to a bad sewing day here? I hate unsewing!!!!!

I'm having problems with my serger, and when I went to go cut a sweater for some longies, I did it wrong and now the pieces aren't big enough.

I borrowed my friend's serger yesterday and was using a serger for the 2nd time in my life and putting elastic in a new way (sewing with a 3 step zig zag, I've only ever sewn a casing)

I had to pick out the elastic 3 times and the first usable prefitted I got has elastic sewn to the top of one leg and the bottom of the other. I'm NOT picking it out a 4th time!

I feel your pain!

May the seam ripper be your friend, catch your stitching easily and never rip your fabric (I think we should all bless our seam rippers when we first purchase them!)

Update: I decided that I can just turn the diaper around so the inside is the outside, since everything lays flat if I do it that way. The legs roll out now, but that doesn't matter since it's a fitted and it's all baby blanket anyway (no cute outer print or anything - just some odd stripes on one tab ). And you can see the rectangle of soaker stitched to what's now the outside, but again, doesn't matter. It's a fitted and a cheap one at that.

When I do fitteds with the hemp and sherpa I have, I will probably do external soakers for easier cleaning/drying, so I won't have this issue. And if I sew in a soaker again, I'll actually MEASURE how big it should be, rather than just eyeballing it!

But yes, the seam ripper is my friend! I think for elastic, I'm going to do casings for my T&T diapers from now on, and sew the elastic to the fabric for serged (or fake serged until Christmas ) style.

Unsewing sucks!
But good move just turning it around! I probably would have chucked it!

Beth, I actually use an exacto knife. It's much easier to use. I just gently glide it down the zig zags over the elastic and they all fall apart and I can pull the elastic up. To open stitched seams, I just slide it in and it slices quickly and easily. I hate seam rippers. Maybe I've just never owned a good one, but I think they're dull and clumsy (rather like a certain young man I used to date...)

I have exacto knife trauma from a REALLY stupid moment with an exacto knife. You know when they tell you to be careful with them 'cause they're sharp and they cut really fast? They aren't kidding. I have a 2 inch scar on my wrist to prove it! 12 stitchs that stupid moment cost me and I almost needed surgery to correct my idiotic use of said exacto. I didn't touch one for about 6 months afterwards. I still don't have the same feeling in the back of my left hand as my right hand! I lost 2 months of my hockey season too.

I think I'll stick to my seam ripper. I buy a new one fairly regularly ('cause I lose them all the time!) so they don't get dull. I can see how it would be super useful if I wasn't quite so scared of them though. Really, nothing beats the sharpness of a new exacto blade!

My DH had to ban me from handling sharp objects shortly before our wedding, because I kept cutting my hands (and we wanted pictures of our hands with rings on them sans bandaids, stitches, etc.). To this day, I'm still dangerous with sharp objects. I'm probably better off sticking with the dull seam ripper.
