Hi ladies, I just posted on the due date rant thread, since I've had issues with my due dates as well. In anycase, I have a couple questions about PKU. This will be my 3rd child and 3rd homebirth. We didn't do PKU with the other 2 kiddos. I had read a bunch and come to the conclusion that most PKU babies are born albino anyway, and if a doctor told me that my baby was PKU, I would still breastfeed. We try to limit dairy and sugars anyway (since my 2 DDs are fairly lactose intolerant) so the whole PKU diet wouldn't be too much of an issue with us. In anycase, I always felt confident in our decision, but recently I ran across some other information that mentions how PKU tests for a whole bunch of different metabolic disorders, not just PKU. Okay, so I feel like a complete moron now that I didn't pick up on this sooner.
So now I'm second guessing myself and wondering if I should get it done this time. My midwife refers people to either their family doctor/pediatrician or the public health (WIC) office for this test. I really never wanted to bring my newborn into the germy WIC office and that is the cheapest route to go to get it done. I have a family doctor (the one I went to see about my ultrasound) that wants to see my baby 2 days post-partum, but we do not have insurance and he charges $100 a visit. I know PKU isn't really all that accurate until about 4 or 5 days post-partum when they have milk in their bellies. Plus this new family doc does not know that we do not vaccinate. I have heard of a local pediatrician that does not badger parents about not vaxing, but I have yet to interview/meet him. So I guess I am just confused and second guessing myself now. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and get the test, and secondly, should I get it done at the germy gross WIC office or pay the hefty cash to see an actual doctor and get it done there?
Any advice or research you ladies could send my way would be great!
Thanks!
