What's your preferred serging method?

When doing diapers and doublers, etc, do you like to cut the pattern right on the lines, then just serge off a tiny bit? Or do you trace the pattern with a fabric marker, then do a messy cut and serge right on the lines? Are there any benefits or drawbacks to either methods?

I like the top layer to be cut out on the lines & then the bottom layers don't matter so much, but IMO, you need the top layer to be cut out so you can see that the other layers are lining up right... if that makes sense.

: Usually.... especially if it's a lot of layers like a soaker or something. But if I'm doing anything with PUL then I like to cut all layers on the line. don't know why though.

I think for my serged dipes I'm going to do the messy cut and serge on the line. I did my first serged dipes last night (LOVE the serger when it's balanced ) and I think I serged just a bit much off the edges. But they still look okay!
