alpine fleece? would this be for an inner or an outer? I searched the diaper making archives, and am more confused than i was before!

Alpine fleece is another name for polar fleece. It is ususally made overseas and imported in huge quantities by local fabric stores. It can work for the outside of diaper covers or All in Ones. This link may help - scroll down a bit, the first part is explaining the "good fleece" - then read the bit about POLAR FLEECE / NORDIC FLEECE - "Alpine Fleece" is the same thing.

Alpine fleece is an outer fleece! Microfleece is an inner. However, sometimes Hancocks calls their fuzzy minkee-like fleece microfleece, so I can't figure that out. Basically any thicker fleece you find out there is outer material, and Joann's is the only place I have ever found microfleece, and they call it microfleece.

Hope that helps!

whew! I was hoping it would work for an outer...now Im wondering how badly this will pill. Its not the no-pill, I dont know what I was thinking. Oh wait, I do know - I was trying to keep DDs little hands from dragging the bolts down on top of us at JoAnns!

Okay...even more confused. I made a pocket with JoAnns Alpine fleece as an outer and their microfleece as an inner. I washed it once like I would any diaper (hot wash, cold rinse). I havent tried it on DD yet BUT - I did the water test, had to press to get any soaking through. When I lifted up my hand, the micro had wicked through, seemed dryish on the top. Yay! THen I thought, maybe I should test the outer layer? So I did. Water went through IMMEDIATLY, and left the top dry. What gives?!?! If I use it, DD will just soak through, I may as well put a cover on this, which wasnt the idea.

If I had some PUL, all this fleece I bought would be great inners!

Hi!

I use JoAnn's Alpine fleece for my wicking inner layer. It works great for this and DS's bottom is usually very dry.

I also use it as the inner layer on my two layer fleece covers, when I am using an outer fleece that isn't very water proof, I will use two layers of fleece to help keep everything drier. But I wouldn't use the alpine fleece on its own as a single layer outer as you're describing, my experience with it would indicate that it would leak upon compression.

Maybe just put the pocket on your kid at home and see what happens. My guess is that in the absence of compression, you'll be fine, but when she sits down wearing cotton pants...moisture will happen.

Sorry to disappoint, but this is my experience. And BTW, I bought a whole bolt of it (10 yds) b/c I like so much as the wicking layer. Also it doesn't pill terribly at all, it just gets sort of 'rough' and 'worn' looking, but not pilly.

THE WATER TEST IS NOT ACCURATE!!!

Seriously, I'm going to ask Lala to make a new sticky in here.

That said, the alpine fleece may not work, but still, the ONLY way to know for sure is to try that diaper on a baby.
