Unsewing...

So as I sit here unsewing my baby blanket fitted (I decided that I really want to fix the soaker pad width and make it RIGHT before I go on to another one... I want these perfect so I can make my friend some fitteds out of hemp french terry!)... I feel like there should be a song to go along with the seam ripping. Is there one I don't know about?

ETA: I just stabbed myself with the DULL seam ripper! I told you it's not safe for me to use an exacto knife!!!

Yep! And it took a little while (I sewed this thing up well!), but it's been unsewn enough to take the soaker out and trim it. It's pinned and ready to be sewn back in. This 32 year old blanket is just about hanging by threads after being seam ripped though! I don't think it will last through multiple kids.

Ok, I finished my diaper... Well, except for adding snaps. If my dad has drilled the holes in my arbor press, I might be able to try it out today on some industrial snaps (I've got a standard size die set coming soon, and then will be finding a new home for the industrial size, if anyone needs them).

Screw up for this version... After unsewing, and then sewing the newly trimmed soaker pad back in... I sewed the WRONG side of the inner body to the RIGHT side of the outer body. So now my franken-soaker is on the side that touches baby.

Oh well. At least it's really soft, so even the serged edges of the original blanket shouldn't bother him. It's still a useable diaper, just not as pretty. I ended up using the Lastin on the legs afterall, and then using swimsuit elastic on the back waist. Overall, I think it turned out fine. I'll do another baby blanket fitted to perfect my stupidity, and then try it out on some hemp french terry and sherpa!

Oh, and I ordered the VB fitted pattern today, and have the DD Potty Dance Pants pattern in hand, so I'll be sewing some diapers with tried and true patterns to help get my diaper sewing skills up. I think my drafted pattern is working out ok though. Seeing how the VB fitted does the different sizes will probably help me resize my own pattern for different sizes, so I know where it's best to take stuff in, etc. My current pattern is a size large. Also, the VB fitted pattern gives me a chance to practice with my serger after Christmas.

And I'll be sewing a dozen training pants for my autistic nephew before Christmas. I need to get one done before Thanksgiving to try out on him and make sure that ye verily, they will work for him. My sister picked out orange for the outer color (she thinks he tends to prefer orange over other colors), and I asked if I could do neon orange since that's just a cool diaper color. So supplies are ordered for that, and now I'm anxiously watching my mail box for die set, snaps, and OSDS supplies/pattern. I also got a pair of longies in the mail yesterday that my sister made, so I'll post a pic of those later. I need to add elastic to the waistband (BIG TIME), but I hope to have him wear them tonight to a hockey game. They say "UAH" down the side - that's our university's letters. And the longies should go well with his hockey jersey.

Beth, Sorry to have brought up unhappy memories about exactos. You've made me think twice about having some care handling mine. Leo once got a hold of our rotary cutter and sliced his finger with it.

Vera, I'm interested to see how these dipes are turning out. Please post pics so we can all gawk.

Ain't that the truth!

(you have no idea the amount of respect I treat my exacto with now! I do a fair number of home repairs, have used many, many electric saws, drills, sanders, etc, etc, etc. The only major injury I've had from anything that I've used was that slip with the exacto. sigh. One day I'll learn to use the right tool for the job EVERY time!)

It sounds like this diaper was one of those projects that's just doomed to have a funny glitch in it somewhere! Glad you got it to a wearable point!
