Stupid Butt!

That is what my 3.5 year old has been saying all morning. He spent about 45 minutes with our neighbor boy while my dh helped his dad move some furniture. And this is the pleasant term he learns in that time.

Anyway, I started out telling him that was a yucky word and we don't say that in this houses. He continues. So I ask him to go in his room. He continues but adds, "Stupid Daddy," "Stupid Mommy." Nice. I go down stairs and try to ignore the yelling upstairs.

A few minutes later he comes down and says, "Mommy, are you not going to tell me to stop saying stupid butt?"

I told him I realized that he can choose what words he uses and what words he doesn't use. Its his voice and he can make those choices. But I did tell him those words did not make -me feel good.
He says okay.

I then asked him why he says that word. He says because its fun and its beautiful.

Then he goes back to playing with his cars and has not said the word since.

Anyway, I am happy that I turned that scene around. I was so mad and irritated that word was coming out of his mouth. But once I let it go and realized it was not my need to control what he said, it just all worked itself out.

Until we go to grandma's today, I'm sure.

Good luck at grandmas. I'm regretting that we rented Jimmy Neutron because that introduced the word "butt" into ds's vocabulary, the phrase "kick your butt" in particular. Oh well.

One day I made the mistake of saying "that really pisses me off!" to my DD (not one of my more stellar parenting moments). A few minutes later, she sat down with a Winnie-the-pooh book and "read" a story in which every other line was "pissed me off". Piglet pissed off Pooh, Pooh pissed off Christopher Robin, and they all "pissed off" through the forest.

It was all I could do to contain my laughter. But at the same time, DH and I just sat in awe. It was like watching the wheels turning in her head as she tried out this new, seemingly powerful phrase in a variety of situations. When she was done, we explained that it's okay to use those words at home, but that we don't use them when we are out becuase they upset other people (like Grandma).

You know she never used that phrase again.
