I'm assuming they designed the trial with the age restriction b/c of these studies. From the OP's article:

Studies have suggested that a quarter of the U.S. population has some lingering immunity from childhood smallpox vaccination, but the rest -- 223 million people -- are believed vulnerable. Virtually no one younger than 37 has been vaccinated.

But again, later, if you have a temperature of acute illness within 3 days prior to being given any registered vaccine, that's okay. So long as the temp isn't over 40 deg C...

Hmmm, I wonder what "studies" they're talking about b/c this article completely contradicts that statement. It's a BBC article, but it talks about the United States.

Michael Sauri, director of the Occupational Medicine Clinic in Maryland said: "The study is, to the best of my knowledge, the only one since eradication which tries to look at the durability of immunity.

"It's showing us that after 20 years immunity is not going to be there."

By the way, the pic of the woman with smallpox all over her face is an actress: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/2014513.stm

It is shocking to me that some people actually believe we should resume mass vaccination of all citizens "just in case" someone ever decides to use smallpox as a bioweapon. Seriously, how can anyone believe that is a good idea? DD and I both have had eczema (we both have clear skin at the moment....) and I honestly fear that if they started a mass vaccination campaign again, they wouldn't care. I think they would try to vaccinate us anyway - especially if we didn't appear to have eczema on that particular day, kwim? And smallpox vaccine can be fatal to people with eczema.

And tell me, how did the actress "demonstrate" the effects of smallpox?

By sticking bits on the face?

Anyway, I stuck much of what I've written on smallpox on this board, but its probably a gazillion pages back from here. Doubt it will have been archived.

Actually plumetting, its a good idea. The human race is so conditioned to hysteria over smallpox, just think what mayhem it would cause.

But better still would be a variant.

I believe that Ken Alibek suggested the best variant would be a smallpox/anthrax.

There's no vaccine to a variant.
