Birth Plan for Birth Center

Ok, I know birth plans have been discussed before and I did a search, but I didn't find anything too helpful. Plus, I wanted to have someone take a look at it before I show it to the midwive on Wed. Since I am using a birth center a lot of the usuals for a hospital birth don't apply.

Labor
-I would like gentle direction as to different positions to try to help ease the pain of labor.
-I would prefer as few internal exams as possible.
-I want to choose the position and place in which I push, but would appreciate direction on different positions.
-I do not want to be directed or coached to push. I want to wait until I feel the desire to push.

After Birth
-Baby is to be placed on my stomach directly after birth.
-Do not clamp or cut the cord until the placenta has been delivered.
-Do not pull on the placenta or use fundal pressure unless there is a specific reason, if so then discuss it with me first.
-Husband is to cut the cord once placenta has been delivered.
-All tests to be done while I hold the baby or wait until we have had time to bond.
-No Vitamin K shot. If the midwife feels the Vitamin K is necessary then we will discuss it and if I agree, then oral Vitamin K can be administered.
-No Hepatitis B shot.
-No Eye Ointment.
-No Heal Pricks or Blood taken until 3-day check up.
-PKU to be done at 3-day check up or at 1-week appointment at pediatrician’s office, not at birth.
-If baby is a boy, NO circumcision or retraction of the foreskin.
-Babies tongue to be checked to see if it is tongue tied, if so then tongue to be clipped before we leave the birth center.

Things the BC already has in place:
-Food and drinks allowed during labor
-They don't do routin IVs
-Allowed to walk, move, try different possitions, etc.
-Every Birth room was a tub for water labor/birth.
-I don't think they circ, but one MW did ask if it was a boy did I want him circ and I told her absolutly not, but I thought I would add that in there just in case.
-They are also perfectly fine with not doing the PKU (at birth), Vit K, HepB and eye drops.

Did I miss anything????

I am also curious if they do blood tests at birth, if so what do they normally test for other than the PKU? If it is blood type, then that can wait (both DH and I are O+). But are there tests they do that are important within the first few days of life?

They will not do circumcisions at a birth center, so you don't need to worry about that. Even in a hospital, they don't do the circs immediately after the birth -- it's usually a day or two later. You will be going home after a few hours, so you have nothing to worry about.

They would only do additional blood tests if there was a complication and the baby needed a septic workup or something similar. At that point, you would probably be transferring care to the hospital, anyway, as birth centers don't generally have their own labs.

What about no routine administration of pitocin after the birth? At my birth center birth, they gave me a shot, which made my recovery so hard. I don't think it was their routine, and I was close to hemmorhaging. But maybe say something just in case.

I would also say something like "no vaginal exams unless requested". A midwife's definition of "as few as possible" could differ greatly from yours. To her, that could mean five, where in your mind, that means one.

No artificial rupture of membranes unless requested? (My MW offered to break mine, and I declined.)

Otherwise, looks good! I hope you have a great birth!

When I had my son in the hospital they did his circ within the first 24 hours. I told them I wanted it done (*sign*) while I was in labor. I also told them that I wanted to be notified when it would be done and I wanted him brought to me IMMEDIETLY after. They brought him back from the routine nursery observation and he had been circ. They didn't even mention it to me. I had to page the nurse and have her tell me how to care for it. This child most definitly WILL NOT be circ, but I will leave that in there just to make it perfectly clear. Though baby won't leave the room for our entire stay, but I just want to have to there, clear as day, YK?

I made the adjustments you suggested. I didn't even think about the pit after birth, not sure if they do that, but I don't want it. I will also double check with the mw about blood tests at birth. I am not sure if they test blood sugar or what, but I want to know ahead of time so I can decide if I should wait or not. I know they do 'some' of their own labs, like iron and gestational diabetes, at least they have a lab tech who doesn this at my visits.

Thanks so much for your suggestions, they were VERY helpful. I am still open to anything anyone else suggests.

I hear you on the circ thing -- you really don't want it. My main point was that they don't do circs at birth centers, unless the birth center is attached to a hospital. Only MDs can perform medical circs.

I think your plan looks pretty specific. Much more specific than mine which read something like "arrive, have baby, go home... and let me do things my way while I"m there"

Are you, by any chance, delivering at the Birth Center in CH? If so, great place, that's where we went and it was a really wonderful experience. (hooray for water birth!)

I asked that they not announce the gender of the baby. I wanted to do that myself .
