sewing patches on waterproof fabric

Thread Starter
ok so my dh wants me to sew a bunch of patches on his backpacking bag. the thing is it's a waterproof bag and i don't want to destroy the integrity of the waterproofing. what can i do to preserve that while still securly sewing on the patches? I thought maybe a waxcoated thread? would that work? thanks

Could you sew the patches on with polyester then use seam sealer, like for tent seams, on the inside stitches?

I don't think it is going to be completely waterproof though. Could you glue the patches on instead? It's not like a bag is going to be washed a zillion times like a diaper.
