worried about nutrition with m/s

Hi,

I am 12 weeks now and I know you are supposed to have good nutrition in the second trimemster particularly. But I am worried because I still feel so sick and it is hard for me to eat. I can't take my prenatal, but I do take folic acid. The only healthy thing I can stomach is fruit and fruit juices and dairy. Meat, eggs, nuts, fish, and vegetables and whole grains make me feel sick. I literally haven't eaten those things since September. My question is - does this compromise the baby? Does any one else have any strategies for maximizing your nutrition when it is just so hard to be able to eat?

Should I be worried?

Thanks,

Allie

Don't worry. The baby will take the nutrients that your body has stored, so even if you can't eat much, anything is great right now!! Try not to worry too much about it. I know with DD#! I was vomitting all the time, and couldn't hardly eat, but my doc wasn't concerned because I was a healthy eater before getting pregnant.

Yep, I'd have to agree with Ms. Sydnee there mama. In the 1st tri I lost almost 20 lbs b/c I was so sick, no vomiting but severe nausea, and had to sayonara the prenatals. Made me so sick I could barely stand. Only in about the last week maybe have I started to feel better. That was around week 15. I am 16 weeks today. I tell ya, I did not think I was gonna make it! I have been taking Flintstones chewable kids vitamins with iron, yum and oh so easy on the tummy, folic acid and chewable calcium. I haven't decided if I will go back to the prenatal or not. I may break it in half and take half in the AM and half in the PM. Not sure. This system I have going right now seems to be working pretty well. There's still not too much I want to eat but I am starting to want veggies again. Oh how the asparagus is calling my name... I was living off of canned pineapples and oj for a while there. Don't worrry mama. Your appetite is bound to return and remember that your sweet baby will get what he or she needs.

Thanks for the reassurance!

I just feel so guilty when I compare this pregnancy to my son's. WIth my son, I ate very healthy, had little morning sickness, and even ran every day. It's quite the opposite this time. I suppose that's just the way it is...

Thanks!

I'm with everyone else. I wouldn't worry too much unless you are feeling dehydrated... which since you are able to keep down juice doesn't seem to be an issue. I was really sick with my first pregnancy up until 16-17 weeks. I ended up not gaining weight until right at 25 weeks, and then did a pound per week.

The baby will take what (s)he needs from your stores until you are able to eat more. I also didn't keep down prenatals until I was done with the sickness and Rach is the picture of health and meeting all her milestones with ease.

I ate poorly with my son. He turned out beautifully.

This preg, I am also not eating well. I just don't seem to have an appetite for anything. Once in a while I get an interest, and then look out!

I am having a hard time eating protein. Meat - yuck. My usual way is through beans - yuck.
Yogurt - yuck. Last time at least I was able to eat Peanut butter now it is semi-yuck. I have been trying cheese. semi ok

I think my lack of protein is affecting how I am feeling, so I am trying harder. If anyone has any ideas of other foods - that would be great.

All I want to do is go out to eat, and have other people's prepared good. It is tough being pregnant on a budget.

Right there with ya. I've been doing better the last several days, partly because we're literally broke and in anticipation of that 25lb turkey I gotta bake Wednesday.

It's a day to day thing what sounds good to me. I've been drinking something like 3 cups of Swiss Miss hot chocolate every day.
