Getting a LOT of pressure on Vit K - Page 2

Well, for me the chance of getting cancer is a real problem. I am pretty sure I read that the main cancer allegidly caused by the Vit K was lukemia. My DHs father just died of acute lukemia in May, my cousin is currently fighting lukemia, her sister has some form of cancer (can't remember what), my other cousin's 3 yo is fighting cancer, plus my dad had bladder cancer. So if not giving the Vit K shot could help my childs chances of not getting cancer, then I would much prefer going that route. Yes, so many people have cancer now and there are so many possible causes that it is INSANE, but I want to do as much as I can to protect my children and myself, YK?

I also don't like the idea of clipping my childs tongue myself, but yes I would do it if no one would helped me and my gut was telling me not to get the Vit K and my child needed to be clipped (ie not nursing well). I highly doubt I would cut too far, if anything I probably wouldn't cut far enough. Worst case senerio is I clip it a little to help out with nursing, then when baby is 8 - 10 days old have a doctor finish the job. I don't know if I could even clip it, I am just going to have to hope that the worse case senerio doesn't happen.

Heck, there isn't even a high chance of this child being tongue tied so I am probably just stressing myself out over nothing. *shrug*

Six studies since the one mentioning the cancer risk- which was a poorly done, mismatched study- showed absolutely no risk of cancer with the vitamin K shot. If those studies weren't performed, I'd be with you on this, but it has been shown that *that* isn't the problem. It doesn't mean there aren't other problems. I'm very sorry to hear about your father and the history of cancer in your family, that must be very rough. If cancer is the only reason you'd not consent to Vit K, I'd suggest doing some more independent research on it by yourself to get the full story.

I still think that a different ped (or a different midwife? Do they have any experience with this?) would do the tongue thing for you, if the baby wasn't showing any signs of problems, even without the K- after the fact. They are probably pressuring you now about it, but after the fact I'll bet you won't have a problem getting it done. I think it's important to get it done, so I'd also try ASAP after birth. It's worth worrying about it now, I think, even if the chances are low- it's always good to be prepared!!

Hopefully, you won't have to worry about this at all. IN any case, in any situation, they should not pressure you so hard and make you feel bad about any of this. If they have really good, understandable, scientific proof for what they think is important, they can relay that information to you in a non-pressurized way. Pressuring someone is not convincing them. If I feel pressured, my BS ALARM goes off, and I immediately don't trust anything they say at all. I completely understand that feeling.

By the way, the baby with the "brain bleed" is exactly why they do the vit. K. shots, and is NOT a poor excuse. If that was your baby, and it was attributable to clotting factor and could have been prevented with vit. K, you'd think it was a good excuse. To clarify, though, it's a good excuse to *offer* vit. K, but not a good excuse to make you feel bad about not consenting to it.

I definitly agree. I didn't mean to make it sound like the Vit K was totally usless because odviously some children have been saved by it. However, just because 1 child in 10,000 has a brain bleed doesn't mean every child absolutly has to have the shot. Which is also were I am coming from. This birth is going to be as interventionless as possible, as well as the after care of my baby, so along with the cancer issues I have I don't like to give a shot 'just because'. If my baby was that 1 then I would want the Vit K, or if I had other risk factors, but as far as I know I don't. And I don't want anything other than breastmilk being put into my child inless it is necessary.

If by chance the baby is TT then I would be the peds office wouldn't even ask if the baby had the Vit K, they would probably just assume. They probably don't see that as being a vax which they know I don't do.

Vit K takes better when given intramuscularly than orally, that's why it is oftengiven in two oral doses. But yes, it's the exact same stuff, they just put it in theirmouths instead of inject through a syringe.
This depends...with my first child the mw gave him by mouth the same Vit.K that they would use for the injection.

But, with baby #2, and a different mw, she was able to get the oral version that they use in Germany. It is only for oral use. Many countries in Europe use oral Vit. K so they have formulated it specifically for that use.

So...maybe you can find an overseas 'contact'

I had a different vitamin K too. My naturopath got it from somewhere, I forget the brand. I did one drop in his mouth then another drop in a week (?). I tasted it before I gave it to the baby and it was taste-less. It was like super bland tasting oil. Just a teeny drop.
