Need fast opinions on Brother LS-1217

I want to learn to sew and I found this machine used online for a great price. Should I buy it? Is it a good beginner's machine? I've NEVER sewed before but plan on taking a class on sewing. I'd like to be able to sew clothes for DS, some curtains, napkins, and eventually diapers.

I'd love to hear feedback on this machine. I could probably get it for under $30. It comes in the box with manual.

Hi, I do not have any actual experience with this particular model but when I first learned how to sew I had borrowed my sister's Brother machine and I sent it back to her the next day. I was using a Basic Bernina in Sewing Class and Loved it. The Brother's machine just drove me crazy. It was not user friendly. Something kept needing adjusting. I wanted to throw it out of the window.

Get a better machine and you will enjoy sewing instead a lousy machine will deter you away.

Thanks for the advice. What about an older Singer? I've heard those are good. I'm just looking for something inexpensive at this point so I can learn the basics then I'll know which kind of machine and which kind of options I'll need.

Here is more info on that Brother machine:

I recently bought a Brother after reading a bunch of positive reviews on Amazon.com. I'm a total sewing novice so I asked my mom (who's been sewing 30+ yrs.) to help me set it up and she said the directions were the most confusing she had ever read. If you get one (because they are really cheap) you might need to have someone help you thread it and etc. The directions suck!!!

buy local buy local buy local. I dont mean buy local from walmart I mean buy from a sew shop. It might cost a tad more...but, it will be VERY much worth it!

A cheap machine will work OK if you want to occasionally make a piece of clothing or a curtain...but you venture into diapermaking or anything htat requires a FEW layers of fabric...it wont work well.

buy local buy local buy local
