Holiday presents for the bump?

Only 37 days to go... and I only have one person left to buy for. What do you buy a newborn ? What about a gender-neutral newborn?
I was thinking of a stacking rainbow tunnel or the fire tunnel myriad do: http://www.myriadonline.co.uk/element3.gif I don't know why, but this baby FEELS like fire...
maybe a cute little pair of shoes or something? A teddy bear? A rattle or something to focus on- or possibly a lambskin of his/her very own, seeing as Isaac's old one is looking distinctly tired these days.
Obviously, if this baby turns out to be a girl then we will be doing much, much purple velvet clothing instead, but until then, I can browse...

i was thinking of getting baby a "star baby doll" from the waldorf school fair on the 26th ( kind of like this but nicer and made by the folks at the local school.. http://www.bellalunatoys.com/dolls/items/starbaby.htm) and maybe a few other sweet little handmade things.. i know she probably wont enjoy them for a while.. but its still babies first christmas..you know? i also got her a pair of really sweet soft foam/leather shoes that come from poland and a little wooden ladybug toy from a sale that a woman here had. so cute! i also plan to get some yummy bum cream and some wooly socks and things like that as stocking stuffers. ill let elwynn help find things so he can feel a part of it.

The only thing I've come up with so far is Christmas tree ornaments. My dh's grandmother passed away this year, so I got the baby the ornament I knew she would have gotten him for his first Christmas in her memory. And I plan to get another for him when I get ones for the other 2 kids. They open the ornament on Christmas eve.

I'm not even sure what I'm going to get my toddler and dh is just going to have to figure out what to get his ds b/c I have no clue!

I don't actually know when I'm going to get any gift shopping done...maybe I will just do it all online this year.

I'm having a hard time thinking of baby presents that aren't secretly mama presents, you know? Like, I totally *could* buy him a bunch more fancy Cloth diapers or a neat swaddle blanket, but are they more for the kiddo or for me?

I'd love to do ornaments, but I have a feeling that both grandmothers and the Fairy God (great) Aunt are going to do them, so I'd best refrain. Which is a pity, because I'd really LIKE to do it myself, even though it's tradition in both families to let the grandparents do it.

I love those links to toys -- I spent WAY too long going through the bellaluna webpage! I'm thinking of knitting or sewing a stocking for the baby; we're not Christian, but I like the idea of everyone in the family having a stocking for all kinds of little things. I guess I'm trying to think of things that can be heirlooms...

I'm not preggo anymore(although at times I wish I was ) BUT last year, I was and my family and I did buy my lil one books. It was nice b/c I read them to him in utero, so he technically got ot experience his presents right away, but he has them now too. Books are just great gifts for babes of any age!!!
That doll is cute though!

Ooh- yes, I love that doll too. I like the idea of ornaments as well.

I hadn't even thought that baby doesn't have a stocking yet.. at least, now I know what I'm doing this evening (we're going to my mothers for Christmas, so we've made her a stocking- the first one in 50 years- and one for Steve as well because he'll sulk if he doesn't.)

Hmm-- the stocking idea is good -- guess I better learn how to knit first.

This thread is related to another question I have been thinking about lately -- but really not too much since I am more concerned about just birthing the baby sometime in the near future -- is what kinds of toys to babies even like at an early age? Guess we will find out. We have no toys for babe as of now but I can't imagine s/he will have any use for them for some time.

Sorry, no great gift ideas from this defeated mama. (Don't worry, I'm not really that depressed)

They like their feet, red socks, and your face. Oh, and the boob.

Seriously, we never bought any toys for our daughter until she was almost 1, and even then from the consignment stores, because I didn't know what babies liked either. It turns out that her favorite toys were dishes, silverware, and stuffed animals. Who knew?! As long as they have something to chew on and stare at...

I think I will put a bow on my boob, and maybe a specail ornament or doll...
