Pot Holder Material?

My brother has requested pot holders for Christmas, homemade.
I want to work with the materials I have instead of going to the store to buy insulated pot holder material since that is pretty much buying potholders.
This is what I am thinking:
Layer of corderoy
layer of terry
layer of batting
layer of terry
layer of thick canvas-like cotton.

Do you think this will be sufficient? I will quilt the layers after I sew them together and add seam binding.
I have some wool material I could use also, from a skirt I never wear.
Has anyone made these? Any tips?
Thanks!

I think that sounds like more than enough. On Food Network, you always see the chefs using the tail end of a kitchen towel, five layers of thick fabric should be plenty for mere mortals. You could probably ditch the batting or the terry and still be fine.

I agree, it should be good, but you'll probably want to make one and test it out Carefully of course.

I would skip the batting unless it is wool or cotton. Synthetic fibers can melt at high temps. Not sure it would be an issue, but just to be safe.

Sounds like a fun project and a very nice gift.

I have ones my mum made from a couple of layers of denim and a few layers of old towel. They work great. I'd gather the layers of fabric together and see if it's still flexible enough, we have some she made with too many layers and we can't hold onto anything with them.

Thanks.
I made one last night with batting, it is synthetic but the label said flame retardent. I'll test it out and maybe make a new one without the batting.
