Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachy officially split

LOS ANGELES Nov 23, 2005 — After months of rumors, denials, and salacious magazine covers, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey are officially kaput, just in time for Thanksgiving.

The couple jointly announced their separation Wednesday, confirmed their publicists Meredith O' Sullivan and Rob Shooter.

"After three years of marriage, and careful thought and consideration, we have decided to part ways," Simpson and Lachey said in an official statement.

"This is the mutual decision of two people with an enormous amount of respect and admiration for each other. We hope that you respect our privacy during this difficult time."

The photogenic couple wed in October 2002 and went on to star in their own reality show, "Newlyweds," on MTV. The show made them A-list celebrities.

Following Simpson's role in 2004's "The Dukes of Hazard," tabloid magazines began reporting trouble brewing in the couple's marriage.

U.S. Weekly first reported the couple's split in its Oct. 17 issue.

It's hard to feel sorry for them when they put so much of their life out there for public viewing but still, I do think it is sad that they are splitting up...

Very sad. I like Jessica Simpson alot, but even if I didn't, I think it would be awful to go through divorce in the public eye.

Towards the end of the Newlyweds, I thought I could see where Nick was getting consistantly annoyed with her, kinda like the novelty was wearing off. They just didn't seem to get along very much.

i didn't watch many of their shows but it was pretty obvious it wouldn't last. it is too bad tho, i hoped they would prove everyone wrong too.

I watched PLENTY of episodes of their show, and Nick seemed to have a beer can plastered to his hand at all times. She deserves better, IMHO.

he always looked at her like he didn't like or respect her. that bothered me. I wonder if she ever watched her tv shows and saw that.

I am sad for them, and yes I bet it will suck to go through this in public. I also think Nick is going to make this a difficult divorce, I mean she has most of the $$, fame and pretty much everything else. He will not be happy. I too wish they had not lied for so long, though I do understand why, they are a brand, which is also very sad. I had hoped they would prove the naysayers wrong.

Jessica was heavily in debt and her career was over while they taped the first season of Newlyweds. Without Nick, Jessica was not be where she is today. I believe he is entitled to anything he asks for.

They both looked pretty selfish and narcissistic, the one time I saw their awful programme.

I am not surprised they're splitting.
