Yet another name poll...

For a girl, we like Emilia Joanne or Evelyn Justine. Or, maybe Evelyn Grace (Grace is my grandma's middle name).

Boys are much harder. Dh and I have been discussing boy names. Our last name is a very simple one-syllable, anglicized Irish name (the O' was taken off generations ago). Ds is named Aaron Robert, so we'd rather not clash with that. Robert is a family name on both sides. I don't want a really popular name, but don't know if I want to go too unusual, either.

Here are some of our picks, with name meanings and my thoughts:

Aidan Joseph: fiery one/he shall add
--Dh and I both really like Aidan, but it sounds a LOT like Aaron, and its getting so popular! Then again, Aaron was in the top 50 the year ds was born, and I still like it. Joseph is dh's grandfather.

Kian Matthew: ancient one/gift of God
--We just came up with this one, so I'll have to wait and see how it grows on us. Kian was 721 on the popularity ranking, so not very common! We like Keenan too, and it has the same meaning as Kian. I think both are at least pretty easy to spell/pronounce. Does Kian go with Aaron?

Other first name considerations: (sheesh, they all are similar to Aaron!)

Alan (cheerful harmony, my dad's middle name)
Alec (protector of mankind)
Braden (from the wide valley)

Help!

In case you're wondering why I'm posting on Thanksgiving...
We ended up staying home for Thanksgiving because my dad's sick and contagious and we have a huge snowstorm. We could've gone to the ILs here in town, but decided just to stay put and make a nice dinner (although no turkey) here at home. I think this is the first time we've celebrated a big holiday with just our small immediate family (dh, me, ds, and new baby). I'm lovin' it! Dh and ds are both currently napping.

I'm a big fan of both Evelyn and Aidan. I like both Justine and Grace with Evelyn, but I think Grace is slightly ahead in the race.

I think I like Keenan better than Kian. I LOVE the name Kieren - have you thought of that? The meaning, small dark one, probably doesn't do anything for you, but I think it's such a pretty name and it's Irish. I'd use it myself, but our last name starts with a C and the names together don't sound very good.

Happy Thanksgiving! I'm an American expat in Australia, so we celebrated last night with a roast chicken when my husband got home from work. Kind of a bummer, but we spent the evening decorating the Christmas tree, so I'm starting to get into the holiday spirit.

Thanks for all the input! We probably won't go with Aidan because of the popularity and because it's soooo close to Aaron.

Yes, we thought about Kieran, actually. We both like it, but I don't like the meaning quite so well. What if we have another tall blond, like ds?
And, I thought Kian would be easier to spell and pronounce.

One name book I came across said 'Evelyn' is probably a combination of Eve and Helen. When you put them together, that means "life light" which I think is really nice. But, dh and I have also been really attached to Emilia since I was pg with ds. We actually both liked Emily and Emma (his grandmother), but then found out they are WAY too popular. I also read a couple different series of books with a main character of Amelia (The Princess Diaries series and Amelia Peabody mysteries... talk about two entirely different characters!), and I really liked that name. So, when I found the Emilia version, I thought that was perfect. Plus, I like that you can get a lot of different nicknames out of it. She can be Emma, Emily, Mia or Lia. And, I can just see a little Emmy Jo toddling around. Of course, Evelyn could be Eve, Eva, or even Lynn.

I think we'll probably wait and see which name fits better for a girl.

For some reason, I like girls' names that can be made into a lot of different nicknames, but I don't like boys' names that have nicknames. Anyone else feel that way, or am I just weird?

Please keep the input coming!

i really like kian, is it pronounced as its read (key ann, or more ki ann???)
Also have you considered Declan as its a great irish name and not very common here in canada anyhow. Plus i love it, but im biased as its my sons name, and we have only ever had positive comments on it.

I like Emilia Grace, actually. Evelyn is a lovely name, but Emilia has so much more soul to it. Plus I like all the nicknames you thought of....girls like names they can play with (I'm an Elisabeth, so I've had a blast).

For boys, as much as I love the name Aidan, I'd stay away from it. It's going gangbusters with popularity right now, and there are two or three different spellings of Aidan that are in the top 50. Do you like the Welch version, Hadyn?

I think Kieran is a great, great name. So Irish, so strong--really, really great. I have an Irish friend that named their newest daughter Ciara (the Gaelic spelling of "Kiera") and they thought "little dark one" was sweet because she was born with lovely dark eyelashes.

I also like Braden, mostly because it's starts out sounding very different than Aaron. Braden Matthew is nice, as is Braden Joseph.
