Know any great environmental novels?

Only read one; Ishmael by Daniel Quinn. But I would like to read more fictional stories on this enormous topic that is of such fundamental importance to us all, imo.

What are some good novels with ecological themes you have read and enjoyed?

I consider Dune by Frank Herbert to be a great environmental novel. Sure, the sci-fi story is set thousands of years into the future on a waterless planet but its message of living in harmony with the environment and conserving resources is something we should all pay heed to in 2005 and beyond.

Also either of her essay collections, particularly Small Wonder, her newest. And in general, anything by Barbara Kingsolver is a great read!

You may also want to read some of Quinn's other books

I'll check my bookshelf and post back. I'm sure I've got some others.

I highly reccomend reading all the books by Daniel Quinn, esp. The Holy...sends chills through me just thinking of it..

Ecotopia is another great book. I forgot the author, it's in the bookshelf in the other room, but if I get up to get it I'll have to do 10 other things for 3 other people before I get back here!

Ecoptopia: Basically, Washington, Oregon, and N. Cali secced from the US, b/c they got a hold of a nuke and threatened the rest of the US. The ecoptopians create a new sustainable society. This book has lots of great ideas...I sometimes fantasize that it really did happen...Of course it's a lot harder for me to think that way now that I don't live in Oregon anymore.

The Fifth Sacred Thing by Starhawk...and its prequel Walking to Mercury. Both good books.

It's not a novel series, but Anne LaBastille's book series "Woodswoman" is amazing. She took Thoreau's Walden idea and did it in the Adirondacks and her experiences living in the woods, off the land without harming the environment around her as best as she can.

I LOVE The Fifth Sacred Thing. I reread it every few years, it's that good. I also second the Ecotopia recommendation.
