Placenta eating question

Thread Starter
I'm having my first in January and I've been considering eating the placenta to prevent ppd. I don't have a history of depression, but I do get bad mood swings during PMS so I'm worried I might be at risk.

My question is if there has been any studies on whether eating the placenta prevents PPD, or if it is just one of those things that experienced midwives know from experiences. Any other health benefits to eating the placenta (I know that it can help stop hemmorage)?

Thanks!

Hmmmm, well, I don't know of any scientific research, but women have been doing it throughout history. The way my midwife described it to me is that the placenta is the most nutrient filled organ in the body bc it gives your baby everything it needs to survive. So when you eat it, you are getting all those goodies. You can't argue with that logic.
I couldn't bring myself to actually eat mine, so my midwife made it into pills and I take it when I am not feeling well. I am also going to save some for ds when he doesn't feel well. That just sounds beautiful to me: ds getting some of that utero goodness after the fact, kwim?

Anyways, let us know what you decide to do and congratulations on your coming baby!
