To sum up, my daughter is 10 months old and due to a food reaction, has been on strickly breastmilk for the past week. I would like any advice or information on supplementing breastmilk with a home-made goat milk formula (?) and a healthy food intruduction schedule. I'm nervous about aggrivating her fragile digestive system again with foods. . .

Last week, her naturopathic doctor said she is okay but my daughter seems really thin. I pump at work and come home at lunch so she can breastfeed. Has anyone made their own goat's milk formula to supplement while breastfeeding a baby this age? I've heard of adding kids vitamin drops and flaxseed oil to goat's milk and water? Is it okay that my 10 month old daughter is eating only breastmilk? Or should I be feeding her more food?

Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Gosh, that is above my head, but you may be able to find some useful information in this kellymom link:

Food Allergies

You are doing a great job. And if it offers you any encouragement, my gigantic baby boy, now 14 months, wasn't interested in eating anything other than breastmilk until about a month ago. So, I wouldn't be worried if your milk is the baby's only food source.

i know a woman whose son wasn't at all interested in solids until 13 months when he went straight to chili!

just as babies develop at their own pace in other areas, so to do they in the area of food. you said she's "thin." Is she meeting developmental milestones? Happy, healthy, alert? If so, I'd suggest you stick to BM. it's made for your baby! the goats milk is made for baby goats!

good luck!

I guess I'm just feeling insecure about giving my baby just breastmilk! I'm getting a lot of flack from my mom to give her other things . . .

As far as milestones, she's super happy all the time, never in a bad mood (even when she's teething, she's chill) and she's crawling, standing up and down and moving around all day long so she's definately burning up the calories. I'm beginning to worry because she hasn't pooped since Friday afternoon . . . so this makes me think she's not getting enough to eat . . .

Going longer between poops is normal for exlusively breastfed babies. Less waste to let out

My first was 100% breastfed for his first year and really didn't eat solids regularly until 15-18 months old. He was/is in the 95th %. My daughter is 15 months and eats plenty of solids but gets most of her nutrition from breastmilk.

The growth charts are based on a small sample group of formula fed infants so take it for what it is. There are charts for breastfed babies at www.kellymom.com and www.promom.org (I think)

If I were in your shoes and making enough milk, the baby interested in suckling enough, then I would be AVOIDING other foods in her diet. I'm not a dr, can't pretend to give you medical advice, just mommying perspective.

I delayed wheat and gluten in my son until 15 months b/c of family wheat sensitivities. He didn't get corn or corn syrup until around the same time. If he's had more sensitivities, he'd have been even more restricted, getting only bm until around 14 months (as long as milestones, health and weight were good) and then introducing avocado, wild salmon, brown rice, millet, amaranth.

Just my 2 cents. What a good mama you are to be working so hard to feed her right. Don't listen to your mother, she's ignorant and hasn't done the research. You do the research and listen to YOUR gut, not anyone else's.

I wouldn't give goat milk to a baby with allergies unless I'd had her tested specifically for goat milk with a skin test or equivilent. I'd be equally wary of flaxseed oil and vitamin supplements for a baby wtih food allergies. If you truly didn't have enough milk (which doesn't sound like the case here,) I would suggest a hypoallergenic formula before goat's milk.

Babies can certainly thrive on breastmilk alone for the first 18m+ Many babies express an interest in solids way before that, but there's no nutritional need for supplements for a 10mo who's nursing on cue while you're with her and getting ebm while you're not.

Don't worry too much about her weight gain right now- it's very normal for babies to slim down when they get active. Don't worry about the pooping either- her bowel is growing and breastmilk has very little waste in it!

My dd was basically on just breastmilk for the first 13 months. She's fine. She would eat somewhere around 3 cheerios or a cracker a day. Other than that, just mama milk. I also would NOT add a formula and I would introduce solids very slowly and follow her lead. Don't feed her. Allow her to self feed when she chooses.

Don't be held to the Gold Bottle Standard.

Way to go Momma! Great job.

Please ignore the formula based advice about solids. Your Best Milk is all he needs. When he wants more, he will take it from your plate.

I might add some water, instead of the goat milk. I try to keep away from non-human milk the first two years. All that garbage about needing huge amounts of calcium is based on studies funded by the dairy industry.

Please remember you are the mom. Others may have opinions, but you have the answers for your child. Have you seen the have some bean dip post?

Ha! My little guy, who like I said wasn't interested in solids until last month, has grown to love my black beans and rice. Recent diaper changes have been interesting.
