I just came across this thread, and I wanted to share my experience. I was 7 when my grandma died. I attended the viewing and the funeral. However, I only remember certain things. When I was looking at her body my grandpa was patting her hand and kissed her cheek. I pondered that for years, how he could touch a dead body, until as I aged I realized that love endures, even after death. Also, at the burial we all got to pick flowers out of the ones on her grave and my mom pressed them in little memory boxes. I cherish that box to this day. I do not recall the funeral service, only those events stick out in my mind. But I was sooooo glad I could go. I needed to tell her I loved her one more time.
Anyway, the funeral probably already happened, but maybe your niece could plant a flower at her grave and take a clipping and plant it in their yard or do something like my mom did with the box. Best wishes.
