Sewing Machine for X-mas...and I don't sew...Help!

Hi everybody, this is my first post in this forum. For an early Christmas gift DH bought me a Brothers sewing machine. I'm not sure what model but it has a foot pedal, other accesories, and what not. He is picking it up tonight. Now I've never sewed a thing in my life , and apparently this is a pretty decent machine and I really want to learn. I do have a few small projects I need to do like make curtains, hem and patch jeans... And eventually want to learn how to quilt. Way far ahead I know. Whats the best way to practice or teach yourself? He had a lady that works at the shop help him pick out everything I need to get started. Half of it I don't even know what its for. Is it easy to teach yourself as you go? Or do I need to find someone to show me? ANy tips would be great.

Take the sewing class at the dealer. They normally have free class along your purchase of the machine. The instruction manual is also the best sewing book. I put the manual right beside by bed and read it all the time.
