Can I stuff a pillow with something OTHER then batting?

I made a couple pillows for the boys our of scrap material I had and I want to stuff them... but I wanted 100% cotton batting, which Joanne was out of today... I don't want to venture out again anytime soon!!! Any ideas on other things I could use around the house? I'm using Daddy's t-shirts for the back of the pillows and for the baby quilts. I wanted to keep this project simple... and cheap. : )

Just off of the top of my head I thought of small shredded strips of scrap fabric, small snips of recycled yarn, basically anything in small pieces that is soft would work, IMHO.

In some of the Natural doll forums I hang out in some people talk about filling the dolls with some grain like millet or something to make them heavier. My massage therapist was talking this weekend too that there are some grains that make a very comfortable pillow, but again i can't be sure which ones...mixed with some dried lavender could be nice too (lavender & sage are good Lice repelents too ...I just got them outta my house LOL

Pillows with herbs make good dream pillows too! Different herbs can make a different effect.

Just a thought!

Lint. No really. Every time I prewash wool to felt it up, i get enormous amounts of lint from the dryer. I'm saving it to stuff small toys with.

I second the lint. My dh's grandmother says it makes great stuffing.

I've thought of using lint but I've wondered how it holds up to washing. Has your dh's grandmother mentioned anything?

She never said how well it does with washing. You could try making something small like a pillow and then wash it. I bet it would hold up just fine.

buckwheat hulls
cotton fabric scraps - makes the item heavier than batting.
unspun wool (not that you've have that lying around)
scraps of polar fleece, which is heavier than batting, but not as heavy as cotton scraps
rice - but you kind of get a rice sock. You could also microwave the item and it's a heating pad.
corn (NOT popcorn). Not always comfy, but can be heated like the rice.
