How Cold is Too Cold? - Page 2

I don't go by temperature, I go by feel. I am guessing that at about 20 it startes to feel too cold. Mainly I go by this: if the inside of my nose freezes when I go out, it's too cold for the kids to play outside. Ramona's cheeks get flaming red and then get so dry they crack, even when I am slathering on lotion and oil. As much as I want the kids outside every day, it's not worth damaging her skin.

Yesterday I was going to take the preschool co-op kids outside to look for animal tracks in the snow. On the way to co-op I heard that it was 7 degrees with a windchill factpr of -5. We didn't go out!!

Namaste!

i would say it depends where you are.

here in northern mn we're used to it being cold. so my cutoff is ~10 degrees. But when I lived farther south and the coldest day of the year was more like 25, then my cutoff was much warmer.

I dress my kids in warm snowsuits, warm boots, wool socks and hats and mittens. The mittens usually have sleeves on them so they (a) won't pull them off and then when their older (b) they won't leak snow into them.

Fleece mittens might work for you in Missouri, but here in northern Minnesota we don't wear fleece between about october and april. I do have a handful of double layer fleece mittens that are nice.

When we go xc skiing with dd and she's just sitting in the sled behind us or if she's in the baby jogger, then we put a down blanket on top of her so she's warm and cozy.

hehehe at 40* we will go out in wind breakers.

To go out and play our rule is double digits for actual temp. so at least 10*. To just get out of the house and be out and about if our car will start we will go out. I have to say though anything less than 10 and we are not so inclined to open a door for any reason. I have to pump myself up to check the mail.
