Debi, I'm so sorry about your little one. I hope she and you recover soon, and I'm so glad that you're back home. That's the best place to re-coop.

:

So this whole "nursing burns tons of calories" thing... tell it to my belly fat! We live at a boarding school, in a boys dorm, so my favorite places to NIP are in front of the guys here, or in the dinning hall with all 340 students milling around, plus all the faculty families. I figure I'm giving them all an education. Also, I have no less than 4 other new moms here at the school, all girls who were born this fall, and none of them NIP, so I figure the more I can do it, the more I'm paving the way for others to feel comfortable. If fact, the other day we were all having lunch together and everyone starting talking about how they plan to breastfeed for six months, and then wean. I didn't say anything, but it made me sad.

I also live at a boarding school and nurse everywhere. I am in the boys dorm once or twice a week and I nurse around them. they were all spooked at first, but now they are used to it and they look me in the eye, instead of diverting their gaze. I also talk babies with them alot.
One boy said " I remember when my Mom nursed me " and then he stopped and got all shy about it. I said that he should be happy that his Mom nursed him for so long. Instead of the other 17 year olds making fun of him, they were all a little in awe that his Mom nursed him for so long.
It was cool.
I am trying, but I can't seem to write anything but a comment on the last posting. My 2 year old and babe see to that!

I hope everyone that is sick or dealing with sick babies is on the mend. We have a wee cold here too, but it sounds like some of you are dealing with bigger issues. You are all in my thoughts. Get well soon.

Hello! I've been beyond busy with Thanksgiving things and such, it has been quite some time since I have shown my face around these parts! Just thought I'd check in!

I love these NIP places! so funny. I have never felt weird about NIP...but then again Zana nurses well in her sling and since we've had problems with supply, mom's diner is open anytime!
Actually I love to Nurse and shop...Multitasking!!

debi, that's horrible about samara! hope she is better soon, and hugs on the tough decision to quit. are you keeping dd1 home now too?

gracious, how is the low supply going? good to see you again

nak

debi, wow - what a rough week...again!! i hope samara's doing better - laryngomalacia's no fun - sending huge hugs to both of you (and to the rest of your family) - also hugs on your decision to quit - that is a huge thing, but hoping it works out well. hugs, hugs, hugs!

nip rocks! - and to you two who live at boarding schools & are educating the next gen of dads -- right on! ((i am imagining beautiful ivy-covered buildings, sepia-toned classrooms, and lots of tweed jackets a la "dead poets society", and my vision gets even better)) so cool.
Thank you everyone, for all the hugs! right back at all of you!

I took Samara in to her pediatrician for a followup, and she has ANOTHER ear infection. Now we're on a different antibiotic. This poor baby. And she's mewling in the next room, so I must get to her -- but just wanted to pop in and thank everyone for their well wishes -- and Nancy -- thanks for the PM!

I think dd (3.5) has Fifth's Disease, we are waiting to hear back from the doc.

ds is puking non stop.

Both kids seem to be in a great mood.

Its just going to be one of those days when I will have to sit and hold ds all day. He's unhappy if I put him down at all.

hat size clothes are your kids in?
ds is starting to get tight in 6-9 month clothes. Unlike dd he is tall and wide! She was short and tubby.

Hi and welcome! I LOVE your daughter's name!

Debi - sorry little Samara has had such a rough time, hope she gets better soon!

Hi fridgeart! Welcome!

Kristin - I love nursing tanks! They hide everything--love handles and all! I have a white and a black one from Target---they are around $16. I buy a size larger than I normally wear because they seem to run small...either that or I'm bigger than I normally am. I cordinate with the color clothes I'm wearing (light or dark), and most people can barely tell I'm nursing because there's no skin showing! I've seen the glamormom ? nursing tanks too, but they are pricey.

New mama - We co-slept for the first 2 months, but I had to move him to his crib after that. : No one was getting any sleep with him in our bed anymore. He was restless, and wouldn't sleep for more than an hour at a time (he'd nurse too much and puke everywhere), my 3yo would come in the bed between 2-5am and wake him up, then as soon as everyone was asleep again, Johnathan would cry and wake Nathan up....it wasn't working. Johnathan sleeps so well in the crib that I figured as long as he likes it, we'll do that.

Johnathan had his 4 month appointment, he weighs 14 lbs, 8 oz. Doc had to give me the non-vaxing lecture, but he was pretty nice about it.

He's in 6-9 month size clothes, but they are big on him. I hate tight-fitting clothes.

What's Fifth's disease? Hope he's all right s.
Fifth Disease is a very common childhood viral infection. Causes rosy cheeks, bumps, and milk cold symptoms.
Its actually dd that has it (at least that's what I think it is so far).
First of all I hope all the sick babes are feeling better!!
Lots to read through and catch up on-here we go...
Evie just had her 4 mth. appointment, luckily our Dr is pretty understanding about our decision to delay vaxes til at least 12 months, and then probably only do some of them...still doing my research!! Evie's 15 lb 4 oz and 26"! She's a bit of a giantess. She started rolling over a few weeks ago, but I don't think she knows how to do it-it just happens sometimes. She's chattering lots and giggling, so cute!! And she's gone from being a great sleeper to a not so great sleeper-this and other symptoms lead me to believe she is teething. I hope it goes fast-I want my happy baby back! Other than that, things are going well. We are sort of "modified co-sleeping"-she goes down in her crib til she wakes up to feed (used to be around 4, now is around 2) and usually stays in our bed from then on. She toughed out her first cold and it wasn't too bad, thank goodness.
As for some of the questions about nursing/sizes, I've nursed pretty much everywhere, and for someone who's usually pretty modest, whipped my boob out pretty freely! DD still wears some of her 0-3 month stuff, but is generally in 3-6 month stuff, with the odd 6-12 piece in there. I think they just stick tags on randomly!
DDs waking so I should run-I'm happy I found this thread! Happy holidays to everyone and enjoy the cold weather!

Thanks for asking! I venture to now say that it is going well. Hosanna was just weighed yesterday and she is now 10.11# wooohoooo! We are supplementing her with goats milk. We found some people who would sell us goats milk unpasturized and straight from the goat! I did a lot of research and she is actually getting more vitamins then she would be with formula...this makes my heart happy.
I am breastfeeding still too! She usually breastfeeds about 3-5 times during the day, and then only breastfeeding at night (mainly, I'm far to lazy to get up to get a bottle ready at night! ) I haven't noticed any change in my supply at all. When she's done breastfeeding I can still hand express milk...and sometimes during the day if I have not breastfed her for about 4 hours I do leak *yipppee* My theory is (and correct me if I'm wrong)...when babies get older and are eatting more solids, mom's milk supply doesn't die because baby isn't sucking as much as before...so I pretend that that is where we are at :-) and goats milk is our "solid"
I'm not using an SNS feeder. I'm not pumping. I did for a while, but it was very emotional for me, many many tears. As much as I would love to be able to only breastfeed, it is so much more important to enjoy the experience I think...and we are there now.
I'm so proud of my little pea she's done so well!

I'm sorry to hear about all of these sick babies! My prayers are with you!

Oh and my girl is in size 0-3 months We were very proud when she grew out of her newborn stuff just a couple of weeks ago!
I can't even imagine 6-9 right now! That's amazing! Way to go momma's!

Grace, that pic on your blog of your dh as holiday tree is sooooo funny! and I love your family pic. Hosanna is a sweet petite treat (as we say in my family).

Okay, just a moment of mommy jitters here:

I think Jonas lost weight (or stopped gaining at all) last week with his horrible cold. He was definitely taking in less milk than usual, and I know my supply dipped because I was sick too. He was mid-16 lbs at his pediatrician appointment yesterday, but that's nowhere near the super fast weight gain he's done so far.

He seems happy, especially now that he can breathe through his nose again. I'm making an extra effort to offer the boob frequently and let him nurse as long as he likes.

Should I be worried?
Nabigus, I wouldn't worry. He may nurse a lot more in the next few days to catch up, but I'm sure he'll be fine. The thing to worry about is dehydration -- as long as he has tears when he cries, and the inside of his mouth isn't tacky/sticky (instead of wet), he's fine. I know about worrying -- trust me! -- but I bet he'll be ok.

Well, folks are posting pictures. Samara is still deciding how she feels about the saucer, but she's certainly calm in it. She's got that seven-mile stare

to all the mommas and sick babes. That's hard. I am grateful that we have yet to have a cold here. Even my dd has not been sick since ds was born!

Henhao- Thanks for the reassurance that I would not be flamed here. Thanks all for understanding that there are different strokes for different folks. I just wanted everyone to know that I am not up for any vax debates.

Fridgeart- WELCOME, we're glad to have you!

As for weight and sizes, my ds is now 16 #s and is fitting perfectly in 6-9 mos. clothes. This is strange for me because my dd wore newborn clothes till she was like 4 mos. She is still tiny at almost 3; only 27 #s.

For Christmas my dd will get a twin bed (she has her own room, never co-slept, She prefers it that way) and then we will push the crib/toddler bed up against our bed and start to wean our son out of our bed very slowly. He is now sleeping through the night, and my dh would like him to graduate to his own space, because he is beginning to turn sideways in the night and kicking me and rooting around on dh's back. Disruptive to dh's sleep.

Are any of your babes able to be put down when tired and full of milk and drift off to sleep? My ds has done this a couple of times and it was wonderful! Don't get me wrong, I like nursing him to sleep, but would like to find another method of having him go to sleep so that way my dh can lay him down and I can attend/ spend more time with dd.

Anyhow, gotta run, and calling. . . . gotta get them done while children are napping. . .
