How do I clean my gas oven?

I always cleaned it like any other, was that wrong? The one I have now is self cleaning, so I just set it to that.

It's not self-cleaning and I've always moved around before I had to clean the one where I was living....lol... so I've never cleaned one. How do I do it. I know they make oven-cleaning products, but are they toxic?

They are toxic, but I have had good luck with spraying down the oven, sprinkling baking soda on it, leaving it over night and cleaning it up in the morning.

Just be careful not to touch the thermostat. My mom electrocuted herself cleaning our gas oven and said it hurt like hell.
