ok, i got used to it- eventually- sort of- when 'music choice' (the cable tv music stations, the raison d'etre of cable i cannot afford existing on my tv at all) ceased their world music channel. (i had thought it was just comcast screwing around with me, but looked it up online awhile ago & the fabulous selection of channels they had are just... gone.)
i thought maybe it was just a reflection of the growing hispanic population here, that instead of celtic, world, indian, arabic etc (removed as choices from my consideration) i now had about 15 different hispanic music stations to pick from instead.
THIS IS NOT A RANT ABOUT HISPANIC MUSIC. i listen to the hispanic channels also; merengue rocks for housework, i love the brazilian station, and when the neighbors play 'sabrosito' (our local station) i am blissed out hoeing the melons. i don't *want* there to be a dearth of hispanic stations.
what i want is diversity.
they removed every other interesting station (to me- they even replaced the two kids' stations with disney radio!!! hilary duff + commercials, for raffi, is not a good tradeoff imho) and replaced them with this many facets of one genre. (yes, i am lumping them together rather unnaturally- in the same way that natacha atlas, ofra haza, & cheb khalid would be lumped together on the 'arabic' station. if they still had ONE.

don't bother calling me racist for noticing this & being annoyed; call the programmers racist who couldn't fathom that hispanic people may have ventured out of their assigned musical ghetto & been listening to the french arabic rap station along with me.
as i said, i thought it was just comcast, but now i have just wandered over to yahoo radio, & same thing (provoking rant). under world, we have this:
Classic Latin
Latin Grammys 2005
Latin Hip-Hop
Latin Jazz
Merengue
Pop Latino
Reggaeton
Reggae
Regional Mexican
Rock En Español
Salsa Cien Por Ciento
Brazilian
Tejano
eleven hispanic, two reggae. yep, that's covered the whole world.
wtf? is all 'world music' gone from the world? i wanted to find some ragas to listen to this morning.
i am pleased, pleased i tell you dammit, that there are this many hispanic channels to choose from. if there was infinite bandwidth, i'd wish for a hundred more. but in a finite world, if there has to be choices, could it be, instead of a dozen hispanic channels & no world music, how about at least eleven hispanic channels & at least still one station called 'world music' for everything else? is this unfair to suggest?
is it just me? does anyone else miss the ready availability of world music?
subrant: i have been looking for xmas music that won't drive me up a rope, & these are my choices:
Traditional Christmas
Pop Holiday
Country Holiday
Gospel Holiday
Jazz Holiday
Comedy Christmas
Rock Holiday
Urban Holiday
Latin Holiday
Scrooge Tunes
Kidz Holiday
i thought 'ok, 'traditional', that will keep the sappy poppy crap (if they actually played some cool pop stuff like 'the partridge family christmas card' & indulged my craving for unusual bubblegum it would be ok, but how many times can i expected to hear some of these tunes without going mad?) out of my ears, some hymns, some handel, right? no, it appears 'pop' & 'traditional' are synonyms. more bing. (edit: i wouldn't mind a little klezmer for hannukah or celtic winter solstice stuff, but how much do you want to bet that's covered under any of the 'holiday' stations? 'holiday' my ass, grumble grumble.)
i am the only person who has noticed, right? sigh (must be, since i complained years ago to music choice & have only lost more good stations for my pains.)
second subrant- as a ladyslipper customer & supporter, i'd like to know where the hell my *womyn's music* is too.
ps if someone has a bead on a good selection of commercial-free internet radio stations (i used to have a good welsh station tucked away somewhere & lost it a couple hard drives ago, sigh) *please* post them, for the welfare of humanity.
