Tears without stitches *updated*

Did anyone else not have stitches on a 2nd degree tear at the perineum. I tore straight back to the muscle. After an hour of the midwife telling me there was one more stitch. I told her she was not putting one more in. The Litocane had worn off and I was in a lot of pain with my three year old hearing me scream from down the hall. I would have kept her at the baby sitter and had dh in the room if I'd known it was going to take longer than the 10 min. she estimated. Anyway now I've been told that my decision will cause painful bowelmovements and painful sex for the rest of my life. I'm a little scared.

Can I hear the good, the bad, and the ugly of this. I want it straight. I want stories of how this type of thing has affected those of you who didn't have stitches on a second degree tear.

*Update 1/7/2005 I'm 5.5 weeks pp and midwife said I healed perfectly. She says it looks better than the tear that was stitched in the hospital. Just want to say though...I spent 1.5 weeks walking like a stick figure with my knees together, side stepping stairs with my knees together, not bending past 90 degrees for any reason and in general separating my knees for any reason. I also used this herbal bath for the first week and a half http://www.wellinhand.com/newmama/index.html (had two containers). I didn't resume doing the laundry until a month afterwards. Remember I did have stitches in the muscle but not the skin. Next time I'm going to try a little harder to let her keep putting stitches in.

:

i had a 2nd degree with ds (hosp. birth, fully repaired), so i know there's a chance i might tear this time, too. i'd be interested in hearing what others have to say, as well, since we're UC'ing this time.

I don't know about 2nd degree tears. I had very minor tearing and my mw stitched it but it ripped out. The back up OB said I probably didn't need the stitches in the first place. My mw had been unsure but decided to do the stitches, saying that they had to be done within 12 hrs of the birth. I guess there's no going back once the healing process starts. I know my situation is different and wish I had more info for you.
