Books about dealing with depression?

DH and his sister struggle to deal with their father, who has been depressed pretty much forever. He goes on meds, decides he doesn't need them, etc. Are there any books I could get them that would offer any kind of advice or even just give a new perspective? It's a sad situation...
TIA,
Erin

Here's one I see mentioned a lot: When Someone You Love is Depressed. I got a copy from the library for my dh when I experienced a bout of depression, but he never read it.

Also, many doctor's offices and counseling centers have short brochures about understanding depression--perhaps something like that is an easy place to start? Here are some brochures and brief information online: http://www.med.umich.edu/depression/understanding.htm

Run, don't walk, to get a copy of The Noonday Demon. New perspective for certain. And well written, too.

"Darkness Visible" by William Styron. The best depiction of depression by someone who actually experienced it, in my opinion. When I read it (I've suffered from depression my whole life) it gave me such a sense of relief -- that someone was actually able to describe it adequately -- which is very unusual for a depressed person. I often recommend it to people who have never experienced depression, and who are confused about a depressed loved one's experience....

Depression is tough to deal with it. I dealt with it for a good portion of my life. Been on medications too. I went to see a Psychiatrist (went through many until I found the right one) and it really helped me out. It takes time and it really helped me to talk it over with someone. He helped me break my bad cycles. I probally would never have read a book. A movie that I liked was "What the Bleep do we know". It put things in a new perspective and was very interesting to watch.
