a good antacid?

I get acid all the time. Breakfast, at lunch, dinnertime, trying to go to sleep....

I'm wondering if anyone out there has a good recommendation for someting better than Tums Smooth Dissolve. It worked ok for a while, but it doesn't make the acid go away.

enzymes?

Maybe you could try taking enzyme tablets. They seem to work really well for me. There are all different kinds, even chewables. Good luck, hairpin!

my MW suggested papaya enzymes. i need to get me some. she says stay far away from Tums, that she sees people take too many and end up with kidney stones...

Papaya Enzyme tablets are my best friend!

I get the chewable type, which means they taste good. They work tons faster than Tums. I have gotten vicious heartburn for weeks now, and they are the only thing that has worked so far.

I agree with everyone else...Papaya Enzymes. I just bought some for DH last night for $2.99 for a bottle of 100 chewables.

Thankfully I'm not one to get heartburn...but my MW said to stay away from Tums. It has Aluminum in it which is not healthy...and also she said that in pg women who take a lot of Tums that there are crystals built up on the Placenta at the birth of it that has blocked blood flow to the baby. Bad stuff.

I've been drinking a lot of soda water, Schweppes brand, because it has less ingredients that I can't pronounce!! I helps me quite a bit with the heartburn I get when I am 'hungry'.

I take acidophilus religiously (before meals, esp. in the morning) and it has been a lifesaver. Try drinking milk too, some people prefer before a meal, some after -- I've been doing better lately drinking a glass before I go to bed.

On very rare occasions I take Zantac 75. It's safe during pg and it works so much better than Tums. I don't take it regularly though as I haven't researched it thoroughly.

Good luck and sorry you're uncomfy

Tums suck, but for me, just because they do not work at all. They don't have aluminum in them- just calcium carbonate (which isn't even a good source of absorbable calcium). The non-calcium Mylanta (which DOES have aluminum in it) did work a bit. Luckily my heartburn went away during the 2nd trimester. If it continued I'd definitely be taking pepcid AC right now, but I'm lucky it went away. Whole milk and yogurt were really helpful, especially in the middle of the night when I woke up with the screaming insides

Zantac 75. And you only take it every 12 hrs. You can buy it OTC.

I don't know. I sometimes get acid even with milk. Go figure. Soda water sounds good. I always like Calistoga, but I don't really notice that helping.

I'm going to try a few of your recommendations and see how it goes. I have a feeling if I just try and eat more cautiously that things will get better too.

Thanks.

That has been the key for me, along with soda water: keeping an eye on what I eat. When I eat tomato sauce, for example, I really regret it. What I have done in the past, when I have less time to pay attention to what I am putting into my mouth, I have kept a quick list of what I eat and how i feel after. I don't need to do this now, because eating has become my focus of the day

It has really been a trial and error thing for me. Eating also helps, for me it is cheese and crackers that do the trick, or sometimes yogurt. I expect, however, that as I near and enter the 3rd trimester, the heartburn will get worse.... (dun dun dun)

My mw also said it could damage the placenta

Uggghh heartburn sucks. I just went to the dr. today because the back of my throat is literally burned from acid reflux. I have had a hard time eating for the past 3 days because it feels like I am swallowing razor blades. I got a prescription for something that starts with a P that I need to check out online and call my ob in the morning to make sure its OK to take.

Definitely try the papaya, it has been a lifesaver for me during my two pregnancies!!!

I tried papaya and didn't get any results, but eating a bit of fresh pineapple all through the day really helped. good luck mama!

Oh good gosh. I popped Tums like there was no tomorrow, having heartburn BAAAAAAAAAAAAD for months and months (hurt so bad I would cry and cry sometimes). Nothing was said about it.

(I did try papaya, but the smell made me nauseous, sigh)

The report on my placenta said there was an "area of infarct"....I wonder if that's what caused that?

ugh.

(not pg by the way, just interested in the conversation on antacids)

Yeah Papaya!!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you...perhaps I'm speaking too soon, but I've just had the first 3 days in a row in a long time without heartburn, and in those 3 days, I've been taking papaya enzymes after lunch because of peoples' recommendations on here!!!! I'm VERY HAPPY!!!
