Specifically, is prozac or paxil safe? Any others ok to take while nursing?

Most meds are safe while nursing- some are safer than others.
I've been taking Prozac since ds was about 20mo. Prozac isn't 100% safe for newborns though, and I see that you have a 7 week old, so that may not be your best choice. I know that Paxil and Zoloft are often prescribed for nursing moms. You might want to get a copy of Dr Thomas Hale's book "Medications and Mother's Milk" You can also check his website for info- you have to be a medical professional to post but anybody can read it.

I just thought i would mention paxil can be really hard to get off of u should do a net search on problems with that issue. Zoloft is like paxil but way fewer problems with stopping it. Serzon is a safe one to take. I took paxil when i was pg with ds because of pg depression when i read about it i decided i needed to get off it asap lucky for me i only got the shakes and anger issues comeing off it. Sorry i didnt mean to scare u but i so wish someone had told me before i started it.

In the order of safest of the most common three:
Zoloft
Paxil
Prozac
Prozac is safest in infants 5 months old and older. It can cause withdrawls in baby if used during pregnancy and/or during the newborn phase. It can also cause slow weight gain. Welbutrin can decrease a mom's milk supply in some cases. Paxil is HIGHLY addictive. I was on it and coming off of it was a NIGHTMARE. Zoloft is always a safe first course of action. I'm on Prozac now, have been since dd4 was 9-10 months old, and that's been my life-saver. Good luck momma! I have Hales book if you have any more med questions. Just PM me
