Oatmeal in a crock pot?

Has anyone tried cooking oatmeal in a crock? how did it turn out?

Hi Brenda,

Doesn't seem to me like there's much point. I know it'll keep it warm all day, tho. I have cooked oatmeal in the steamer, tho. That worked fine. I had to turn it off a little early, otherwise it gets too dry.

I put my rolled (not instant) oats in pot, add boiling water, then put the pot on the burner I used to heat up the kettle. When the burner is cool, the oatmeal is ready. Takes maybe 15 minutes.

Are you thinking of putting it on at night so it's ready in the morning? You could do the kettle thing before hitting the shower and it'll be ready by the time you're done

I was reading on another site about this woman who cooks oatmeal in the crock pot all night. she said it is really great the next morning. I eat instant myself LOL. Just curious if anyone had tried it or not.

yes, we do it here sometimes. i put soy milk or water apples, cinnemon, nuts, raisins, oats etc and cook on low all night. it is kinda mushy but tastes good and the house smells great when you wake up. I have done it with regular and steel cut oats. I have the exact measurements downstairs. Let me know if you are interested and I will post them. Be sure and butter or grease the crock pot in some way.

I would like to know how you cook them. My DH gets up so early, and he loves steel cut oats, which, as you know, take a lot longer. He will be thrilled if I can fix him steel cut for b-fast! His favorite!

I just do them in the microwave - only takes about 5 minutes for a cup of raw oats and liquid, etc. If it's only me eating it, it also means less washing up - I just eat out of the cooking bowl!

Crockpot Oats
2 1/2 cups water
1/4 tsp salt
1 cup steel cut oats
Lightly grease (butter) bottom and 1/3 up sides of crockpot. Mix
water, salt and oats, and pour into crockpot. Cook on low overnight.
Makes approx. 3 - 1 cup servings.
Notes: This technique not only works well for oats but also polenta
and other coarse cooked cereals.

Crock Pot Cereal

1/4 cup cracked wheat
1/4 cup oat groats -- or steel cut oats
1/4 cup dried unsweetened grated coconut or oatmeal
3 cups water
1/4 teaspoon salt -- to 1/2
1/4 cup pearl barley
1/4 cup brown rice

Oatmeal
1 c. oatmeal
1/3 c. raisins (opt.)
2 1/4 c. water

You may add other ingredients such as apples, other dried fruits, cinnamon and nuts.
Spray crock pot with non- stick spray. Add ingredients. Cook on low for 8 to 10 hours. When the raisins cook with the oatmeal they sweeten it somewhat, so adjust the amount of sugar or sweetener.
This recipe makes about 4 servings.

Just before bedtime, combine all the ingredients in a crockpot set on low temperature. In the morning serve with your favorite milk, fruit, and whole grain toast.

I've done that before, but I added lots of extra water so it would be like the chinese rice gruel - congee. It was good, but the oatmeal lost all it's texture. I imagine it would work much better with steal cut oats. Just experiment with the amount of water since most crock pots vary alot in temperature anyway. If your crockpot has a timer, you could also set it to start at midnight or 2am or something so they wouldn't get overcooked.

Here's a good idea I've heard but haven't tried. Put the oats and boiling water into a thermos before you go to bed and they'll be done and still hot by morning.

(now that i've previewed this, i see carminex has posted some great recipes! can't wait to try them out.)
