This book feels good in your hands. The paper is heavyweight, and the illustrations flow perfectly.

Are you thinking of machine sewing or hand sewing? Making clothes from patterms or something else?
I've never used any books, but if I were to, I'd browse the bookstore and see if there are any that feel right to me - some learn easier with pictures, others like diagrams, etc. good luck!

If you buy a sewing machine, it will have an instruction booklet that will teach you how to do basic stiches, buttonholes, zippers, etc.
As for learning, go to your local fabric store (not a walmart if you can help it, the people there aren't totally focused on sewing), ask the ladies to recommend a good book to explain the sewing terms and show them in detail so you can understand the patterns.
Then look through the pattern books for something labeled easy or beginner, I've even seen "patterns for dummies". I bought one for making aprons and it had very slow, comprehensive clear directions. It didn't assume that you knew all the sewing lingo.
Then, chose the notions for your pattern, and some thread and off you go! You might want to buy some fabric remnants to pracice on.
Also, these are some items I find indispensible (you can sometimes find them in a little package at the sewing store): a wrist pin cushion in addition to a regular one so you aren't always looking for your pins, a little metal hem measurer, chalk for marking fabric, little scissors to trim thread for next to the sewing machine.
Good luck!
