Favorite spiritual books ...

... and I'm not talking about religious texts, ie., the Bible or "holy writings." We're talking about 20th/21st Century authors writing about religious issues/ practices/ parenting.

And no, I didn't want to put this in the Books forum ...

hmm.. i know there are lots i've read that i really like, but for now i'll just write the ones i can think of off the top of my head.

*everyday blessings ~ jon and myla (?) kabbat-zinn
*winning through enlightenment ~ ron smothermon
*sacred contracts ~ caroline myss

*(something with light in the title) ~ shakti gawain
*astrology for the soul ~ jan spiller (don't have to know anything about astrology to benefit from this one)

How to Know God, by Deepak Chopra
Autobiography of a Yogi, by Paramahansa Yogananda
Conversations with God, by Neale Donald Walsch (kinda bad writing, but excellent content)
The Miracle of Mindfulness, by Thich Nhat Hanh

I really love Deepak Chopra's health and lifestyle books, as well, particularly because of their spiritual emphasis.

Oh! And The Prophet, by Khalil Gibran -- my most very precious!

oh yes, anything by ram dass..

the poetry of rumi is beautiful..

and i also really like robert anton wilson. he's pretty out there, and misunderstood by lots of folks (was friends with tim leary, ram dass, burroughs, into crowley, huxley and whonot..)
cosmic trigger, coincidance, quantum psychology are some good books by him. also writes fiction and is political (has some great essays about bush on his website). www.rawilson.com .

I also like Thich Nach Hahn. And Thomas Merton's books.

Matthew Fox is interesting.

I love this book for parenting: Whole Child, Whole Parent, by Polly Berends (sp?)

Also Gandhi's more spiritual writings

this is kind of odd.....but i saw the movie, Baggar Vance and I thought it was surprisingly spiritual ..I can only imagine the book would be more so....

Anything by Pema Chodron (woman buddhist monk in Canada -- she's so wonderful and current and down to earth - maybe it's because she's from the US, but her tone is sharp and practical which I relate to.)

Christopher Isherwood has a fabulous book and I just went to check the title -- and I just remembered I lent it out and just realized whoever has it, has not returned it!!!!! Anyway, he talks about the struggle between the sacred and the profane in his life.

Pom, Pema Chodron is also one of my favorites. My copy of When Things Fall Apart is falling apart! :LOL

So many that have been mentioned already here--also Siddhartha, The Bhagavad Gita, Krishnamurti, Jack Kornfield (feld?), The Tao, etc. Anything with an eastern orientation.

I'm a fan of Michael L. Brown. I especially appreciate Our Hands Are Stained With Blood, The Tragic Story of the "Church" and the Jewish People.

A bizzare yet surprisingly enlightening book is The Final Quest by Rick Joyner

Insperationally I love C.S. Lewis on Joy and a family favorite is NO Compromise, The Life Story of Keith Green by his wife Melody Green

I haven't found anything particullarly enlightening in recent years, but a few of the titles posted here have peaked my interest.
