I want to try making my first sling, it is most likely going to be a pouch. Which fabrics would work best?? I'd rather not use fleece because we live in FL and it gets realllly hot here.

You could try stretch cotton - it's really easy to work with and makes for a very comfy pouch. Look for "stretch bottomweight" or "stretch twill". These are typically 97% cotton 3% lycra spandex.

I made one for me and a couple for friends and I used anthing I found in the bargain bin, they were just cotton. Batiks are pretty and work well. I made a lighter denim with weavers cloth that came out nice. Everything softens up with washing.
For my new one in june I'm going to try to make one with solarveil so I'll have sun protection at the beach and it won't be too hot. I don't know where to find it though, probably online.
good luck, and have fun looking for fabric.

I'm just wondering... Could you use silk? It's supposed to be very strong and breath well too, right? I'm asking because I bought a bunch and it won't work for what I was going to use it for, but I was thinking it might could make a good sling....
Please let me know if that's NOT a good idea.....

I dont know about silk...
but i can suggest 100% cotton fabric. it breathes well and comes in TONS of different prints. I made a two sided pouch last year with a bright yellow side and a orange/yellow batik on the other. if you want to use it for winter babywearing, flannel is soft and snuggly and also breathes fairly well.
