small for his age

I am not sure where to post this.
My son is 6 years old and is 107cm and weighs 17kg. So he is small and wirery. He is very athletic. He does have allergies to mold and seasonal plants. He eats well. My question is when is it a concern. he is considered the 5th percentil in ht and wght more like 10th. He was born weighing 8+lbs almost 4kg and hadn´t really started to appear small till he was about 4-5 yo. We do have short stature genes in our family my mother is 4ft 11inches and my hub (pat) grandfather was short also. I just wondering if and when anyone would do a work up and what would that be?

I don't have too much info but I too have a tiny ds. He will be 7 next week. Like your sone he is very athletic. My youngest dd is also very small. At 28 months, she weighs about 20 lbs. I would say to do an overall look. How does everything else seem? Is he eating OK? Normal bowel movements, no unusual aches and pains? If you have a small family, I think it is very normal. I would not worry or do any sort of tests unless there were other signs that something may be wrong.

What does your gut say?

I agree about following your gut. I'm 5'3 and I have a sister four years younger than me who's 5'8 and a sister who's 15 years younger than me who's pushing 5'5, lol. My oldest is almost 9 years old and weighs about 45-46lbs and is short (not sure of her exact height). She has gluten intolerance (gluten enteropothy, Celiac Sprue) so that could be a partial cause. I'm 5'3 and DH is 5'8, so neither of us is super tall to begin with. You'd FEEL if something was wrong. I do, however, think looking into food and environmental issues can't hurt. By taking care of those you may not get him to shoot up in height, but you'd get him to be healthier all-around.

I second what the others said... some kids are just smaller. Both my girls are in the 5-10 percentiles. The pediatrician does not seem concerned... youngest DD was born 8.5 pounds and at almost 4 she is a whopping 28 pounds.

Now if you feel something is not right, then have your son checked!
